English Summary/英文概要: Elsewhere is a collection of nine beguiling and
wonderous stories, both modern and historical, set in
Dublin, London, Stockholm and China, always funny
and cerebral. Yan Ge’s first work written in English
will introduce readers to an author at the top of their
career; published widely in Chinese and with stories
already placed with the likes of The Stinging Fly, RTE,
Brick and Faber’s anthology Being Various.
Contemporary stories of isolation, the diasporic
experience, homecoming, digital sleuthing and
obsession are interlaced with those derived from
ancient texts and philosophy. We meet a group
of writers lounging on the edge of an earthquake
disaster zone; a Mandarin ostracised from his old
court, desperately trying to avoid a threat to his life; a
woman who inexplicably loses her voice and the poet
who steals her words. The collection builds towards
a novella following the rise (and fall) of one of
Confucius’ disciples.
