許多人將零碎的個人資訊放在網際網路上永久保存，只要藉由Google搜尋，人們便可以找到這些資訊。尤其使用Facebook和MySpace這類社交網站人的數量十分驚人，在美國，90%以上的學生擁有自己的網誌。但是這種網路開放性，使人們無需經由出版、廣播或是其他傳統媒體，便可將自己的想法傳播出去，但這種轉變也會為個人隱私和名譽帶來重大威脅。例如網路就是利用「cookies」技術蒐集到許多個人資訊。「cookies」就是當進入一個網站時，有些網站會在電腦裡留下「cookies」，當再進這個網站時，因為記錄上次的行為，再次進入時，網站上所呈現的資訊大概就是之前想要找的資料。只要是有心人士，網站也可依據先前電腦上的「cookies」知道一個人以前去過哪網站、做過什麼事。
所以現今社會隱私權的問題無所不在，尤其網路上不論身處何處，每個人的隱私權都不可能得到百分之百的保障，而了解自身的隱私權益，才能在網路發達的世界建立一個互相尊重與信賴的未來。
