代理商:大苹果 CHURCHILL AS WARLORD IN WWI: THE ADMIRALTY, TANKS, GALLIPOLI AND MUNITIONS

页数: 240 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: Winston Churchill is famous these days primarily for his role as the wartime leader of the British Empire during World War 2. He led Britain through the darkest days of the war and won timeless fame through his defiant oratorical eloquence in defending the values of the democratic philosophy behind western civilization. His contribution to the allied victory in World War 1 however, is less well known or understood. He occupied two critical ministries during the war – First Lord of the Admiralty and Minister of Munitions. His fame has been tarnished by widely held views of his responsibility for the Gallipoli campaign and its disastrous outcome. But do the facts accord with these widely held views? In fact, he was only responsible for the naval operation against the Dardanelles and was never in a position to make any dispositions related to the Army which were solely the responsibility of Lord Kitchener, who was Secretary of State for War. He also opposed the army campaign at the time it was mooted, because he saw it as a high risk and knew that the Turks were fully aroused for the defence of the Gallipoli position. The fact is that his replacement at the Admiralty at the same time as the Gallipoli campaign reached its douanement was the result of political manoeuvring by the Prime Minister in forming a coalition government and bitter antagonisms created by Churchill’s resignation from the Conservative Party 12 years before. Thus, it is time to review all the evidence regarding the Dardanelles campaign and determine his real contribution during WW1.

This book looks at the facts regarding the Dardanelles campaign and Churchill’s other contributions to victory in WW1. That the facts are very different to the commonly held views is not surprising.

代理商:大苹果 GUADALCANAL: THE ESSENTIAL VICTORY

页数: 192 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: Through over 250 original black and white photographs and expert analysis, this latest volume in the popular Images of War series documents a series of fierce battles on land, sea, and air which turned Guadalcanal into a decisive campaign for control of the South Pacific from August 1942 to February 1943.

******

After the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese quickly captured Hong Kong, Guam, Wake Island, the Gilbert Islands and Rabaul. Japanese conquests of Malaya and Singapore, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies and Burma followed into the spring of 1942. The Japanese juggernaut continued southwards with bases established at Salamaua and Lae in Northwest New Guinea followed by landings at Buna, Gona, and Sanananda along Papua’s northern coast as a prelude to capture Port Moresby over the Owen Stanley Range to threaten Australia.

Despite a strategic American naval victory at the Battle of the Coral Sea and the sinking of four Japanese aircraft carriers at the Battle of Midway, the Allied situation remained desperate. Japanese naval troops invaded Tulagi Island and nearby islets off the coast of Florida Island on 3–4 May 1942 to construct a seaplane and naval base. Japan’s goal of advancing through the southern Solomon Islands and beyond to New Caledonia, Fiji, and Samoa was to create a defensive buffer against an attack by a slowly-recovering American Navy and further isolate the Antipodes. In July 1942, Allied coast watchers and reconnaissance aircraft observed the construction of an airfield on Guadalcanal 20 miles to the south of Tulagi and Florida Islands. On 23 July 1942, American military leaders prioritized securing the South Pacific’s lines of communication and halting the Japanese advance. The American invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi became operational entailing hellacious land, air and sea battles from 7 August 1942 to 3 February 1943. Guadalcanal became the essential struggle between Allied and Japanese forces, with the victor to eventually control the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. The events of the campaign are expertly described here with contemporary images and detailed text.

代理商:大苹果 HITLER’S HOLOCAUST IN THE UKRAINE 1941-1944

页数: 144 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: Prior to the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, Ukraine was home to one of the largest Jewish populations in Europe. It is estimated that almost one million Jews were murdered in the Ukraine between 1941 – 1944. Many of those Jews killed in 1941 were by the Einsatzgruppen death squads, Order Police Battalions, Ukrainian Police Auxiliary units, collaborators and Wehrmacht forces. Most of those people executed were killed close to where they lived.

Holocaust in the Ukraine tells the plight of the Jewish community in the Ukraine and the mass killings that took place there. It shows how German forces occupied a large part of German-occupied Ukraine, and incorporated it into what was known as the Reichskommissariat Ukraine.

Within a week of the German invasion of the Ukraine police units and their auxiliaries, under the guidance of members of the Einsatzgruppen began murdering Jewish communities. There were various massacres including Babyn Yar where some 33,000 Jews were executed during a two-day period in August 1941.

One of the first massacres in the Ukraine was ordered only days after the start of the German invasion known as the Lviv pogroms where 6,000 Jews were murdered by Einsatzgruppen and Ukrainian nationalist. This was followed by other wholesale murders which included the Kamianets-Podilsky massacre where some 23,000 residents were killed. Other killings too included the Pavoloch, Berdychiv, Odessa Artemivsk Sarny massacrews and numerous other killings across the country.

With detailed captions and text together with a host of rare photographs, this Images of War book is an important study of how Ukraine was subjected to a Nazi policy of terror with an ideological goal of eradicating communism and destroying the Jews and the Ukrainians, who were all classed as sub-human.

代理商:大苹果 LETTERS FROM THE BURMA FRONT: DEAR ANNIE & FLO

页数: 168 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: The Burma campaign against the Japanese in the Second World War involved rebuilding a defeated multi-ethnic, multi-lingual Allied force, trench warfare like that of the First World War, hand-to-hand fighting of ancient ferocity, combined operations with air and naval forces, artillery barrages, opposed crossings of great rivers, tank warfare in the Burmese central plain, and a final rapid advance ahead of the monsoon to Rangoon. It was followed by the Japanese surrender in Singapore and by violent peace-keeping operations in former European colonies in South-East Asia.

Harry Walker was a young doctor in a mobile surgical unit which worked close behind the fighting front. He was a witness to these great events and his letters to Annie and Flo illuminate the bald facts of the campaign. Unlike many other published wartime letters or diaries Kate Venables’ book has a strong, researched contextualising social and military history which is not only authoritative but also written in fluent everyday English which simplifies an often complex war situation. At the same time, it is a personal document by Harry’s daughter and is generously illustrated with images from the family collection as well as from public archives.

Harry’s letters are written in tents, bunkers, and abandoned buildings. As well as Allied soldiers, he treats Japanese prisoners, escaped Allied prisoners-of-war, and Javanese civilians. In the quiet times between surges of casualties, he writes letters about the government’s conduct of the war and what the world might be like afterwards, about books, the vagaries of the mail, and the quality of cigarettes. Annie and Flo, his correspondents and old family friends, respond to his descriptions and his grouses. The letters create a grounded and familiar world away from the mud and blood, a world of Middlesbrough and the moors, family and friends, books and talk, where he is a boy again.

代理商:大苹果 MONOGRAPH ON GERMAN LIGHT ARMOURED CARS KFZ. 13/14

页数: 224 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: The Kfz. 13/14 represented a significant step forward for the German army in the realm of armoured scout cars following the devastation of First World War. Initially intended for training purposes, despite their limitations, including inadequate armament, armour, and off-road capabilities, they played a pivotal role in shaping the tactics and strategies of German armoured warfare doctrine. The early scout cars also provided essential training opportunities for crews, helping to develop the skills necessary for operating more advanced armoured vehicles in future conflicts, as well as provided valuable insights into the design of armoured fighting vehicles to the German industry. Despite their contributions to the early development of armoured warfare tactics, Kfz. 13/14 vehicles were already outdated by the outbreak of Second World War and gradually phased out in favour of more modern and capable designs. Nonetheless, their legacy as pioneering platforms in the evolution of armoured reconnaissance vehicles remained significant within the annals of military history. The aim of this book is to tell the lesser-known history of vehicles commonly referred to as "Bathtubs", which despite their unassuming appearance, shaped the generations of German soldiers serving in motorized reconnaissance formations, who after 1939 found themselves at the forefront of armoured formations spreading terror throughout Poland, Low Countries and France.

代理商:大苹果 TANK CRAFT 46 PANTHER MEDIUM TANK GERMAN ARMY WAFFEN-SS AND LUFTWAFFE UNITS: EASTERN FRONT, 1944

页数: 64 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: During the spring and summer of 1944 a series of Soviet offensives, culminating in Operation Bagration which was launched on 22 June, threatened to destroy the entire German army on the Eastern Front. As infantry units scrambled to hold makeshift defensive positions the mobile Panzer battalions were the only formations that were able to plug the increasing number of gaps in the frontline. One of the most important weapons in the Wehrmacht’s arsenal at that time was the Pzkpfw V Panther tank which had gone into combat for the first time in July 1943. Armed with a powerful 7.5cm main gun, these tanks were capable of penetrating the armour of the strongest Soviet designs and it was planned that every Panzer regiment would eventually contain a battalion of these impressive vehicles. In his latest volume in the TankCraft series Dennis Oliver continues the story of these remarkable vehicles using archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the Panther battalions that fought to hold back the Red Army’s push to the borders of Germany during 1944. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic tanks.

代理商:大苹果 TANK CRAFT 47 STUG IV ASSAULT GUN GERMAN ARMY AND WAFFEN-SS UNITS: EASTERN FRONT, 1944-1945

页数: 64 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: From their introduction in 1940, the Wehrmacht’s Sturmgeschütz assault guns played an essential role in the campaigns of the Blitzkrieg era, the titanic struggles in Russia and the final defensive battles of the war. Evolving from a mobile bunker-buster, armed with a short-barrelled howitzer, the Sturmgeschütz was up-armoured and up-gunned and by 1943 it was increasingly employed as a tank killer. In 1944, largely as an emergency quick-fix, the Sturmgeschütz IV entered service and over 1,000 examples had been built by the end of the war. As the Wehrmacht’s resources continued to decline the assault guns were thrown into every operation and increasingly substituted for gun tanks in official unit establishments. In the third volume in the TankCraft series to examine the Sturmgeschütz, Dennis Oliver employs official documentation and unit histories to investigate the formations that operated the Sturmgeschütz IV and uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the markings, camouflage and technical aspects of the vehicles that served on the Eastern Front during the last months of the campaign. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined, providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic vehicles.

代理商:大苹果 TANK CRAFT 48 STURMTIGER GERMAN ARMY UNITS: EASTERN AND WESTERN FRONTS, 1944-1945

页数: 64 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: The house-to-house fighting encountered in Stalingrad convinced the Wehrmacht that a heavily armoured vehicle mounting a weapon capable of destroying enemy strongpoints should be developed as a matter of urgency. The 15cm-armed Brummbär, built on the chassis of the ever-reliable Pzkpfw IV, was rendered obsolete by developments in man-portable anti-tank weapons and so the decision was made to mount an even more powerful gun on the suspension and hull of the Tiger I tank. The original intention was to equip the new design with a 21cm howitzer but as sufficient stocks were unavailable a specially adapted version of the Kriegsmarine’s 38cm depth charge rocket launcher was employed. Hitler expected great things from these imposing looking vehicles and ordered that vast stocks of ammunition be produced but in the event less than twenty Sturmmörserwagen 606/4 mit 38cm RW 61, better known as the Sturmtiger, were built. Drawing on official documentation and unit histories Dennis Oliver investigates the formations that operated these deservedly famous vehicles and uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the markings, camouflage and technical aspects of the Sturmtigers that fought in the last battles of the war. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined, providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic vehicles.

代理商:大苹果 TANK CRAFT 49: PANTHER MEDIUM TANK: GERMAN ARMY AND WAFFEN-SS UNITS - BERLIN, 1945

页数: 64 到书日期: 1900-1-1 上传日期: 2026-2-12

中文概要:

英文简介: By the end of 1944 the Wehrmacht had been pushed back to the borders of Germany and the Army’s defensive efforts increasingly relied on ad-hoc units scraped together from depleted tank and infantry formations. Despite the dire strategic situation and the ever-crumbling front, industrial output had in fact been expanded and manpower losses were somehow made good. Battered regiments were rebuilt and new units were created and the real striking power of the Panzer battalions was now the Pzkpfw V Panther, perhaps the most effective armoured vehicle produced by Germany during the Second World War. In Dennis Oliver’s latest volume in the TankCraft series he uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the later models of the Pzkpfw V Panther tank and the units that operated this deservedly famous armoured vehicle during the savage defensive battles against the Soviet army during the last weeks of the war. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined, providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic tanks.
