IL SORRISO DI CATERINA, LA MADRE DI LEONARDO (ENGLISH TITLE: THE SMILE OF CATERINA, MOTHER OF LEONARDO)

Professor Vecce has brought sensitivity and respect to Caterina’s life in a story that gallops across the page on the energy of his immense historical research and results in a compelling novel that reads like a story from the Arabian Nights or the Travels of Marco Polo, all the while granting us detailed insight into the mother of one of the greatest minds of all time, Leonardo da Vinci.

Professor Vecce is a historian who has been researching Leonardo da Vinci for many years. When he recently found evidence in the archives that suggested Caterina to be Leonardo’s mother, Professor Vecce felt compelled to tell her story first in a novel because the findings are immense: Caterina was from Circassia, and was brought to Italy by way of the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea, and Constantinople, to Venice, where women from Circassia were brought work on the production of brocade. She was a slave, a woman whose life, possessions, voice, and liberty were taken from her. The author saw so many parallels to our modern-day plight of slaves and international refugees that his desire to allow this woman to be known and to become immediately human in our eyes overcame even his instincts as a historian (nb, his scientific article was published on 30/10/23; his non-fiction title, The Life of Leonardo will be published by Giunti in April 2024.)

THE LOST NOTEBOOKS OF SISYPHUS: A NOVEL WITH COMMENTARY

For nearly three thousand years, King Sisyphus of Corinth has been one of the most compelling characters in world mythology. The iconic image of Sisyphus putting his shoulder to the boulder and pushing it to the summit of a mountain in the Underworld is recognizable the world over.

To many poets and philosophers, from Homer and Aeschylus to Lucille Clifton and Albert Camus, the rebel hero has been a powerful symbol for hard-earned wisdom and the struggle to transcend suffering, while more skeptical commentators have interpreted Sisyphus’ defiance of the gods as futile and doomed.

In this mythopoetic novel, Phil Cousineau reimagines Sisyphus as telling his own tale through notebooks he kept while enduring his notorious punishment, which include surprising revelations about the self-sacrifice he made for his fellow Corinthians, his bold fight against the injustice of the gods, and the unbounded love for his wife and sons that earned him a second chance at life.

The Lost Notebooks of Sisyphus is a timeless allegory that helps us come to terms with our own daily struggles and shines new light on Camus’ existential conclusion that, "We must imagine Sisyphus as happy."

I am Sisyphus, King of Corinth, great-great-grandson of Prometheus, great-grandson of Deucalion and Pyrrha, grandson of Hellen and Orseis, son of Aeolus and Enarate, husband of Merope, father of Glaucus, Ornytion, Almus, and Thersander, and grandfather of Bellerophon, slayer of the Chimera.

I am a champion of navigators, sailors, athletes, merchants, poets, and playwrights, and an enemy of tyrants, despots, bullies, ruffians, and demagogues. I honor the gods and goddesses by building splendid temples, holy shrines, and sacrificial altars worthy of their glory.

Many men deep am I, as my mentor, the deep-browed, long- bearded, wise-counseling Alexandros of Milos described me.

What I am not is a scoundrel, as scandalmongers have impugned across the centuries while exonerating the cruel gods who condemned me.

THE EVOLUTIONIST: THE STRANGE TALE OF ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE

1858: The Malay Archipelago. In the remote tropics a young British naturalist, Alfred Wallace, toils in obscurity. He collects specimens: beetles, moths, ants and birds that sell for pennies apiece in England.

One night, suffering from fever and hallucination, Wallace solves the greatest mystery of the era: the origin of species. To circulate his discovery, he contacts a distant acquaintance Charles Darwin. Unbeknownst to Wallace, Darwin has been secretly penning a near-identical version of the same evolutionary theory for twenty years. Darwin soon achieves world-renown and Wallace earns, if nothing else, widespread grudging respect. But then Wallace returns to England where his advocacy for ideas ranging from socialism to spiritualism launches him on a collision course with the men at the very heart of the scientific establishment, including Darwin.

The Evolutionist tells of one man’s determination to seek out his own truths in his own unique way and the price he pays. From oppressive jungle to mid-Victorian London, this is a disturbing tale of money, class, faith and discrimination.

An impeccable historical novel, with the flavor of a classic with a plot full of intrigues, loves and terrible deceptions, and an engaging and refined style, which takes the reader through the glittering rooms of the imperial palaces and their magnificent gardens, showing us the secret sides of the cities of the East.

John i Tzimiskes who grew up with his maternal uncles, the Phokas, over the time became a valiant leader and fought courageously for the Byzantine Empire alongside Nikephoros II, the most brilliant general of his era, and Leo Phokas. War is all he has left: his wife died during childbirth and his father’s relatives, the Kurkuas, consider him a traitor. When it seems that Giovanni has no other purpose than fighting alongside the Phokas, three witches prophesy that he will become emperor. But how can this be possible, given that Nikephoros, his mentor, sits on the throne and he is the man who raised him and for whom he would give his life?

When Nikephoros turns his back on him and the charming Theophano knocks on his door, Tzimiskes has to decide what he wants to do with his future: remain faithful to the emperor, supporting the principles he grew up with, or take his place, definitively accepting his destiny?

Wars, murders, conspiracies and betrayals: after her debut with Magnificat, Sonia Aggio returns to bookstores with a gripping novel full of twists and turns, retracing the events of an extraordinary man who, starting from a simple soldier, managed to change the fate of his Empire by unexpectedly conquering the crown. In this book, with great talent and accuracy, the author reconstructs the existential parable of John I Tzimiskes through the epic tale of his rise to the throne, describing the daily reality of one of the most extensive dominations the world has ever known.

Stories of the American West by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of North and South, “the best historical novelist of our time” (Patricia Cornwell).

In these timeless stories of the untamed American West, John Jakes thrillingly portrays the harsh realities of life on the frontier with tales of lawmen in the Sierra Nevada, railroad workers in Kansas, and gamblers on the steamboat River Queen. From a saloon showdown unlike any other and outlaws double-crossing each other to a fur trapper hell-bent on vengeance and a power struggle between medicine men, Jakes’s frontier stories capture the same sweeping historical drama and unforgettable characterizations as his epic novels in the Crown Family Saga, the Kent Family Chronicles, and the North and South Trilogy.
