English Summary/英文概要： But wide-eyed teenager Elisa Roundtree dreams of a glittering life in the theatres of Edwardian England. And Jeremy O’Connell, a famous actor-manager leasing His Majesty’s Theatre, has given Elisa her big chance. He considers she cannot act, but believes that her beauty will win hearts, and has hired Elisa as an apprentice, renaming her Elly Fielding.

But Elisa is also betrothed to a cruel older man named Sir John Garingham. When Sir John dies after falling from a window following the murder of a priest by her wastrel father Anthony, it looks a simple case of death by misadventure.

However, suddenly Elisa finds herself in the dock after apparently admitting to pushing her husband to his death on their wedding night. She is sent to the notorious Holloway Prison to await her trial. There she is terrorised by the vindictive Matron who is set on destroying her spirit. Her closest and dearest, including O’Connell, rally to her cause. But one by one her legal team are struck down – one through old age, another through a family crisis, and a third through a burst appendix.
