内容简介: |
Tiffany is a twelve-year-old
who lives high in the Snowy Mountains with her mother. Her father and little
brother live at the foot of the mountains. Tiff is learning to cope with her
family’s new living arrangements, but her mother is restless. When Sian
decides to move interstate where there is sun, sand and surf, Tiff has to
make a big decision. Should she accompany her mother, leaving behind everyone
and everything she knows and loves, or abandon her mother and move down the
mountain to live with her father and Nathan? Where do her loyatlies lie? And
isn’t it unfair that this decision should be foisted upon her? Tiff
realises that she’ll never be able to choose until she has experienced both
options. And then she knows where her heart lies and how important a sense of
place is. Selling points
Educational potential
·
Tiff and the Trout is a book that captures the experiences of a child
caught between parents. It raises a wealth of relevant themes and is ideal
for use in the classroom. ·
Themes
include: - coping
with change and its implications – within the family, from one home and one
school to another, and from childhood to emerging adolescence; - relationships
and friendships – the baffling intricacies of both, and issues of control; - a
sense of place – how people are shaped and influenced by their environment; - personal
judgement – how people may not be what they seem; - the
responsibilities that go hand in hand with being given a choice – how this
can be both empowering and
terrifying; - the impact of sport (in this case
fishing) on the environment. 编辑点评: In Tiff
and the Trout David has taken an experience that is increasingly common
to many children and families, and written about it with refreshing insight
and touching warmth. Running throughout the story is the highly effective
metaphor for love: trout fishing – which requires so much patience and
persistence and understanding, and wherein the sense of loss experienced on releasing
a hooked fish ironically coexists with the fish’s fresh lease on life. As always, David’s perceptive and realistic
depiction of characters is a real strength, as is his close linking of people
and place. There is a wonderful warmth and tenderness in Tiff’s emotional
journey to maturity. It is a story with a heart, and it made me cry. |

and resolves to take to see Brother Inchmahone at the mysterious monastery
which is hidden in a secret fold of Clair-de-Lune’s apartment block. Through
