英文概要: The Italian educator and physician Maria Montessori (1870–1952) is best known for the teaching method that bears her name. She was also a lifelong pacifist, although historians tend to consider her writings on this topic as secondary to her pedagogy. In The Best Weapon for Peace, Erica Moretti reframes Montessori’s pacifism as the foundation for her educational activism, emphasizing her vision of the classroom as a gateway to reshaping society. Montessori education offers a child-centered learning environment that cultivates students’ development as peaceful, curious, and resilient adults opposed to war and invested in societal reform.

Using newly discovered primary sources, Moretti examines Montessori’s lifelong pacifist work, including her ultimately unsuccessful push for the creation of the White Cross, a humanitarian organization for war-affected children. Moretti shows that Montessori’s educational theories and practices would come to define chilren’s rights once adopted by influential international organizations, including the United Nations. She uncovers the significance of Montessori’s evolving philosophy of peace and early childhood education within broader conversations about internationalism and humanitarianism.

by RICHARD NEUPERT

英文概要: The French New Wave cinema is arguably the most fascinating of all film movements, famous for its exuberance, daring, and avant-garde techniques. A History of the French New Wave Cinema offers a fresh look at the social, economic, and aesthetic mechanisms that shaped French film in the 1950s, as well as detailed studies of the most important New Wave movies of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Richard Neupert first tracks the precursors to New Wave cinema, showing how they provided blueprints for those who would follow. He then demonstrates that it was a core group of critics-turned-directors from the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma—especially François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, and Jean-Luc Godard—who really revealed that filmmaking was changing forever. Later, their cohorts Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, and Pierre Kast continued in their own unique ways to expand the range and depth of the New Wave.

In an exciting new chapter, Neupert explores the subgroup of French film practice known as the Left Bank Group, which included directors such as Alain Resnais and Agnès Varda. With the addition of this new material and an updated conclusion, Neupert presents a comprehensive review of the stunning variety of movies to come out of this important era in filmmaking.

英文概要: Tom Boardman was a talented ukulele player from Leigh in Lancashire. At the start of the Second World War, he joined the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. After his training, he was posted to Singapore. To his surprise, there was no actual fighting, but a growing threat that the Japanese might attack. For six months he enjoyed the easy-going vibrancy of a city where cultures mixed and bright lights shone. But Tom wondered why planning and preparation for a Japanese attack on the British Empire’s Jewel of the Empire appeared to be unhurried, disorganised and complacent.

Singapore surrendered to the Japanese in February 1942, and Tom became a Prisoner of War. He lost his treasured ukulele in the confusion and chaos of bitter fighting, but cleverly concealed the cherished ring his wife Irene had lovingly given to him as he left England.

Fortuitously, Tom found a broken mandolin and, using its tuning pegs, made a homespun replacement ukulele. Although Tom said it was too small and not loud enough, it surprisingly survived for two years and gave Tom great solace whilst he slaved on the infamous Thai-Burma railway. Working in the heat and humidity of the Thai jungle was arduous. He suffered from several life-threating tropical diseases and illnesses; the food was sparse and unappetising, and the Japanese discipline was brutal. But they could not take away Tom’s powerful will to survive and his unending enthusiasm to entertain. Despite continuous adversity, he mustered the energy and in the darkest hours raised spirits by singing popular songs to his fellow Prisoners and was always ready to perform at camp concert parties.

After the railway’s completion, Tom built a second, more robust ukulele. He sketched its design and technical specification in his rough notebook, paying careful attention to the precise positioning of the frets. By scouring the prison camp, Tom collected discarded items and, using his ingenuity, improvisation and endless patience, he crafted a remarkable ukulele.

Concert parties provided an important distraction from the harsh realities of incarceration. Tom, with his new ukulele, thrived in the orchestras and choirs and performed in comedy routines, plays and musicals.

After the Japanese surrendered, Tom revealed the gold ring he had successfully kept hidden since his capture three and a half years previously. He soon returned home and, together with his ukulele, reunited with Irene and his family.

The Ukulele Man is a true story of Tom’s triumph over adversity through his passion for music and entertainment and not to let the Japanese defeat him. The Imperial War Museum North permanently displays the ukulele.

作者介绍: About Ray Withnall

Ray Withnall is a retired IT project manager with a passion for researching British military history. Almost ten years ago, he came across a little-known former Japanese Prisoner of War camp in northeast Thailand at Ubon Ratchathani. By making connections in the town (Ray’s wife is Thai and lives in Ubon) and discovering available resources in the U.K., he thoroughly researched the camp. Five years later Ray self-published ‘UBON: The Last Camp Before Freedom’*.

Ray’s second book details the personal histories of all 143 Commonwealth War Grave Commission casualties in Stockport’s Willow Grove cemetery. He combined meticulous family history narrative with creative images of each individual resting place. It is called ‘Behind the Names: The War Graves of Willow Grove’.

Since 2021, Ray has volunteered at the Imperial War Museum North in Salford. He became interested in the exhibit of a ukulele made by ex-Far Eastern Prisoner of War Tom Boardman. Ray met Tom in 2015 and became good friends with him and Tom’s son, Ron. Using Tom’s diaries and papers, Ray developed an ‘Insight Talk’ for IWMN visitors. It informs them how Tom constructed his ukulele and his experience on the Thai-Burma railway.

Ray’s other interests include volunteering for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Public Engagement programme. This involves presenting illustrated talks about the work of the CWGC and assisting in major events, such as the D Day Commemoration featured on the BBC’s One Show in June 2024.

Ray’s father was a D Day Veteran. His parents were members of the Stockport Normandy Veterans Association, and Ray proudly continues their tradition and memory with an active role as treasurer.

代理商:大苹果 THE EARLY CHURCHILL: FALL AND RISE 1915 - 1918
by CHARLES STEPHENSON

英文概要: No other twentieth-century political figure endured so many precipitous falls followed by unlikely resurrection. Across fifty turbulent years he enjoyed – if that is the correct term - at least four separate, high-level, political careers interspersed with periods in the doldrums. As one of his numerous enemies and detractors, of whom there was never a shortage, was to write: Winston is never down, or rather will never allow that he is down.’

Whilst much has been written about Churchill at the Admiralty, and even more concerning his wartime premiership, the ups and downs in-between have received somewhat less attention. Hence this volume, which seeks to tell the tale of the period beginning with him being unceremoniously sacked in 1915. As Lloyd George’s mistress and confidante wrote: ‘It seems strange that Churchill should have been in politics all these years, & yet not have won the confidence of a single party in the country, or a single colleague in the Cabinet.’

She was mistaken. One politician still valued Churchill’s gifts: the Prime Minister from 1916, David Lloyd George himself. But he had to act cautiously. Only in July 1917, during a broader reshuffle, did he dare risk appointing Churchill as Minister of Munitions. This was a courageous move. As one Tory grandee put it: ‘some of us myself included only joined L[loyd] G[eorge] on the distinct understanding that W[inston] Ch[urchill] was not to be a member of the Gov[ernmen]t.’

Lloyd George got away with it however, and few would dispute that his judgement was vindicated. As the man responsible for providing the British and wider Allied cause with the munitions of war, a vast undertaking by any standards, Churchill proved both competent and effective. Indeed, he was still in post at the end of the conflict in 1918, which is where this book ends.

by REX BASHFORD

英文概要: Winston Churchill is famous these days primarily for his role as the wartime leader of the British Empire during World War 2. He led Britain through the darkest days of the war and won timeless fame through his defiant oratorical eloquence in defending the values of the democratic philosophy behind western civilization. His contribution to the allied victory in World War 1 however, is less well known or understood. He occupied two critical ministries during the war – First Lord of the Admiralty and Minister of Munitions. His fame has been tarnished by widely held views of his responsibility for the Gallipoli campaign and its disastrous outcome. But do the facts accord with these widely held views? In fact, he was only responsible for the naval operation against the Dardanelles and was never in a position to make any dispositions related to the Army which were solely the responsibility of Lord Kitchener, who was Secretary of State for War. He also opposed the army campaign at the time it was mooted, because he saw it as a high risk and knew that the Turks were fully aroused for the defence of the Gallipoli position. The fact is that his replacement at the Admiralty at the same time as the Gallipoli campaign reached its douanement was the result of political manoeuvring by the Prime Minister in forming a coalition government and bitter antagonisms created by Churchill’s resignation from the Conservative Party 12 years before. Thus, it is time to review all the evidence regarding the Dardanelles campaign and determine his real contribution during WW1.

This book looks at the facts regarding the Dardanelles campaign and Churchill’s other contributions to victory in WW1. That the facts are very different to the commonly held views is not surprising.

by DOUGLAS S RUSSELL
页数:504    定价:美元   上传日期:2026-2-12
< /td>
英文概要: “It is important that this part of Churchill’s life should have found so keen a portraitist.” - Sir Martin Gilbert

“…this is a most valuable, well-written and scholarly work…Churchillians will want to read and admire it.” - Finest Hour, official publication of The International Churchill Society

“Winston Churchill Soldier, The Military Life of a Gentleman at War is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding Churchill and how his political career was underpinned, shaped and informed by his time in the army. I would recommend it as a key text, one that stands out in the field, with appeal to a wide general readership.” - Allen Packwood, OBE Director of the Churchill Archives Centre, author of How Churchill Waged War and editor of The Cambridge Companion to Winston Churchill

“To understand Winston Churchill, one has to appreciate his time serving with the army, where so many of his character traits were shaped. No book does this nearly as well as Doug Russell’s volume, which gives an exhaustive overview of every aspect of Churchill’s military career, with rare insights, copious never before revealed details and a narrative that is both totally engaging and academically profound.” - Phil Reed, OBE, Curator Emeritus- Churchill War Rooms

“When Douglas Russell’s Winston Churchill Soldier was published in 2005 it was a groundbreaking piece of scholarship, and it has stood the test of time. His expert examination of Churchill’s military career, which had so many implications and reverberations decades later in the Second World War, still stands as required reading for anyone wanting to understand the career of one of the most consequential figures of the 20th century.” - Andrew Roberts, Lord Roberts of Belgravia, author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny

As a young man Winston Churchill set out to become a hero, to make a name for himself in the public eye as a soldier and so make possible a life of politics and statesmanship. There were many chances to fail and many close calls in the face of sword, spear and bullet along the way. Yet Churchill survived and succeeded- an early measure of his courage and stubborn will that the world would come to know so well in the Second World War.

This is the first full-length, fully-researched biography of Churchill’s colourful military career. Using an unrivalled range of sources, and with previously unpublished photographs, and detailed maps by Sir Marin Gilbert, it brings vividly to life Churchill’s motives, abilities, experiences, successes and failures, and his unswerving sense of destiny as an officer in the British Army. The result is a story to echo the man himself- rich in action, courage, charismatic self-belief, patriotism and humour.

代理商:大苹果 LETTERS FROM THE BURMA FRONT: DEAR ANNIE & FLO
by KATE VENABLES
页数:168    定价:美元   上传日期:2026-2-12
< /td>
英文概要: The Burma campaign against the Japanese in the Second World War involved rebuilding a defeated multi-ethnic, multi-lingual Allied force, trench warfare like that of the First World War, hand-to-hand fighting of ancient ferocity, combined operations with air and naval forces, artillery barrages, opposed crossings of great rivers, tank warfare in the Burmese central plain, and a final rapid advance ahead of the monsoon to Rangoon. It was followed by the Japanese surrender in Singapore and by violent peace-keeping operations in former European colonies in South-East Asia.

Harry Walker was a young doctor in a mobile surgical unit which worked close behind the fighting front. He was a witness to these great events and his letters to Annie and Flo illuminate the bald facts of the campaign. Unlike many other published wartime letters or diaries Kate Venables’ book has a strong, researched contextualising social and military history which is not only authoritative but also written in fluent everyday English which simplifies an often complex war situation. At the same time, it is a personal document by Harry’s daughter and is generously illustrated with images from the family collection as well as from public archives.

Harry’s letters are written in tents, bunkers, and abandoned buildings. As well as Allied soldiers, he treats Japanese prisoners, escaped Allied prisoners-of-war, and Javanese civilians. In the quiet times between surges of casualties, he writes letters about the government’s conduct of the war and what the world might be like afterwards, about books, the vagaries of the mail, and the quality of cigarettes. Annie and Flo, his correspondents and old family friends, respond to his descriptions and his grouses. The letters create a grounded and familiar world away from the mud and blood, a world of Middlesbrough and the moors, family and friends, books and talk, where he is a boy again.

英文概要: From their introduction in 1940, the Wehrmacht’s Sturmgeschütz assault guns played an essential role in the campaigns of the Blitzkrieg era, the titanic struggles in Russia and the final defensive battles of the war. Evolving from a mobile bunker-buster, armed with a short-barrelled howitzer, the Sturmgeschütz was up-armoured and up-gunned and by 1943 it was increasingly employed as a tank killer. In 1944, largely as an emergency quick-fix, the Sturmgeschütz IV entered service and over 1,000 examples had been built by the end of the war. As the Wehrmacht’s resources continued to decline the assault guns were thrown into every operation and increasingly substituted for gun tanks in official unit establishments. In the third volume in the TankCraft series to examine the Sturmgeschütz, Dennis Oliver employs official documentation and unit histories to investigate the formations that operated the Sturmgeschütz IV and uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the markings, camouflage and technical aspects of the vehicles that served on the Eastern Front during the last months of the campaign. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined, providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic vehicles.

英文概要: When the German war machine launched its attack against the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, Adolf Hitler had given priority first to the capture of Ukraine, which was against the advice of his generals. In order to secure Ukraine quickly and effectively the German Army Group South entrusted its powerful Panzer Group 1 to lead the spearhead through the country. It included the III, XIV and XLVIII Army Corps (motorized) with five Panzer divisions and four motorized divisions (two of them SS) equipped with 799 tanks. Unlike their enemy, German armoured units had effective command, control, communication, and a massive supply of ammunition and support formations coupled with considerable combat experience and extensive training. What followed in the heartlands of the Ukraine was a series of powerful wide-sweeping, deep penetrating armoured attacks toward the Dnieper River. Places like Dubno, Brody, Kiev, Crimea and Kharkov saw heavy armoured fighting.

This book in the Images of War series is a highly illustrated record of German tanks and armour that fought in the Ukraine between 1941 and 1944. It describes how these deadly machines fought and supported the infantry on the battlefield. It depicts how these formidable weapons were adapted and up-gunned to face the ever-increasing enemy threat. With rare and often unpublished photographs this book provides a unique insight into German armour in the Ukraine from its early triumphant days in 1941 and 1942 to its slow and painful retreat in 1944.

英文概要: The house-to-house fighting encountered in Stalingrad convinced the Wehrmacht that a heavily armoured vehicle mounting a weapon capable of destroying enemy strongpoints should be developed as a matter of urgency. The 15cm-armed Brummbär, built on the chassis of the ever-reliable Pzkpfw IV, was rendered obsolete by developments in man-portable anti-tank weapons and so the decision was made to mount an even more powerful gun on the suspension and hull of the Tiger I tank. The original intention was to equip the new design with a 21cm howitzer but as sufficient stocks were unavailable a specially adapted version of the Kriegsmarine’s 38cm depth charge rocket launcher was employed. Hitler expected great things from these imposing looking vehicles and ordered that vast stocks of ammunition be produced but in the event less than twenty Sturmmörserwagen 606/4 mit 38cm RW 61, better known as the Sturmtiger, were built. Drawing on official documentation and unit histories Dennis Oliver investigates the formations that operated these deservedly famous vehicles and uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the markings, camouflage and technical aspects of the Sturmtigers that fought in the last battles of the war. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. 英文概要: During the spring and summer of 1944 a series of Soviet offensives, culminating in Operation Bagration which was launched on 22 June, threatened to destroy the entire German army on the Eastern Front. As infantry units scrambled to hold makeshift defensive positions the mobile Panzer battalions were the only formations that were able to plug the increasing number of gaps in the frontline. One of the most important weapons in the Wehrmacht’s arsenal at that time was the Pzkpfw V Panther tank which had gone into combat for the first time in July 1943. Armed with a powerful 7.5cm main gun, these tanks were capable of penetrating the armour of the strongest Soviet designs and it was planned that every Panzer regiment would eventually contain a battalion of these impressive vehicles. In his latest volume in the TankCraft series Dennis Oliver continues the story of these remarkable vehicles using archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the Panther battalions that fought to hold back the Red Army’s push to the borders of Germany during 1944. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. 英文概要: By the end of 1944 the Wehrmacht had been pushed back to the borders of Germany and the Army’s defensive efforts increasingly relied on ad-hoc units scraped together from depleted tank and infantry formations. Despite the dire strategic situation and the ever-crumbling front, industrial output had in fact been expanded and manpower losses were somehow made good. Battered regiments were rebuilt and new units were created and the real striking power of the Panzer battalions was now the Pzkpfw V Panther, perhaps the most effective armoured vehicle produced by Germany during the Second World War. In Dennis Oliver’s latest volume in the TankCraft series he uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the later models of the Pzkpfw V Panther tank and the units that operated this deservedly famous armoured vehicle during the savage defensive battles against the Soviet army during the last weeks of the war. A key section of his book displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. 英文概要: Prior to the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, Ukraine was home to one of the largest Jewish populations in Europe. It is estimated that almost one million Jews were murdered in the Ukraine between 1941 – 1944. Many of those Jews killed in 1941 were by the Einsatzgruppen death squads, Order Police Battalions, Ukrainian Police Auxiliary units, collaborators and Wehrmacht forces. Most of those people executed were killed close to where they lived.

Holocaust in the Ukraine tells the plight of the Jewish community in the Ukraine and the mass killings that took place there. It shows how German forces occupied a large part of German-occupied Ukraine, and incorporated it into what was known as the Reichskommissariat Ukraine.

Within a week of the German invasion of the Ukraine police units and their auxiliaries, under the guidance of members of the Einsatzgruppen began murdering Jewish communities. There were various massacres including Babyn Yar where some 33,000 Jews were executed during a two-day period in August 1941.

One of the first massacres in the Ukraine was ordered only days after the start of the German invasion known as the Lviv pogroms where 6,000 Jews were murdered by Einsatzgruppen and Ukrainian nationalist. This was followed by other wholesale murders which included the Kamianets-Podilsky massacre where some 23,000 residents were killed. Other killings too included the Pavoloch, Berdychiv, Odessa Artemivsk Sarny massacrews and numerous other killings across the country.

With detailed captions and text together with a host of rare photographs, this Images of War book is an important study of how Ukraine was subjected to a Nazi policy of terror with an ideological goal of eradicating communism and destroying the Jews and the Ukrainians, who were all classed as sub-human.

英文概要: Through over 250 original black and white photographs and expert analysis, this latest volume in the popular Images of War series documents a series of fierce battles on land, sea, and air which turned Guadalcanal into a decisive campaign for control of the South Pacific from August 1942 to February 1943.

******

After the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese quickly captured Hong Kong, Guam, Wake Island, the Gilbert Islands and Rabaul. Japanese conquests of Malaya and Singapore, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies and Burma followed into the spring of 1942. The Japanese juggernaut continued southwards with bases established at Salamaua and Lae in Northwest New Guinea followed by landings at Buna, Gona, and Sanananda along Papua’s northern coast as a prelude to capture Port Moresby over the Owen Stanley Range to threaten Australia.

Despite a strategic American naval victory at the Battle of the Coral Sea and the sinking of four Japanese aircraft carriers at the Battle of Midway, the Allied situation remained desperate. Japanese naval troops invaded Tulagi Island and nearby islets off the coast of Florida Island on 3–4 May 1942 to construct a seaplane and naval base. Japan’s goal of advancing through the southern Solomon Islands and beyond to New Caledonia, Fiji, and Samoa was to create a defensive buffer against an attack by a slowly-recovering American Navy and further isolate the Antipodes. In July 1942, Allied coast watchers and reconnaissance aircraft observed the construction of an airfield on Guadalcanal 20 miles to the south of Tulagi and Florida Islands. On 23 July 1942, American military leaders prioritized securing the South Pacific’s lines of communication and halting the Japanese advance. The American invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi became operational entailing hellacious land, air and sea battles from 7 August 1942 to 3 February 1943. Guadalcanal became the essential struggle between Allied and Japanese forces, with the victor to eventually control the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. The events of the campaign are expertly described here with contemporary images and detailed text.

代理商:大苹果 TANKS AND ARMOUR AT KURSK 1943

英文概要: In the summer of 1943, Hitler set his sights on a decisive blow that he believed would turn the tide of war on the Eastern Front. That blow would be dealt at Kursk – site of a huge Soviet salient measuring some 120 miles wide and 75 miles deep, and the stage for what would become the largest tank battle in history.

Fuelled by confidence in his elite Panzerwaffe and Waffen-SS divisions, Hitler launched Operation Citadel, unaware that the Red Army was not only prepared, but vastly superior in numbers, firepower, and defensive depth – they outnumbered their opponents by approximately 2.5 to 1. What followed was a brutal clash of steel and strategy, where German ambition collided with Soviet resilience.

Tanks and Armour at Kursk 1943 presents a vivid and richly illustrated account of the German armoured forces that spearheaded this historic assault. With in-depth analysis, detailed captions and a wealth of rare and unpublished photographs, this book brings to life the machines, units, and men behind the last great German offensive on the Eastern Front.

代理商:大苹果 MONOGRAPH ON GERMAN LIGHT ARMOURED CARS KFZ. 13/14
by JACEK ZABIELSKI
页数:224    定价:美元   上传日期:2026-2-12
< /td>
英文概要: The Kfz. 13/14 represented a significant step forward for the German army in the realm of armoured scout cars following the devastation of First World War. Initially intended for training purposes, despite their limitations, including inadequate armament, armour, and off-road capabilities, they played a pivotal role in shaping the tactics and strategies of German armoured warfare doctrine. The early scout cars also provided essential training opportunities for crews, helping to develop the skills necessary for operating more advanced armoured vehicles in future conflicts, as well as provided valuable insights into the design of armoured fighting vehicles to the German industry. Despite their contributions to the early development of armoured warfare tactics, Kfz. 13/14 vehicles were already outdated by the outbreak of Second World War and gradually phased out in favour of more modern and capable designs. Nonetheless, their legacy as pioneering platforms in the evolution of armoured reconnaissance vehicles remained significant within the annals of military history. The aim of this book is to tell the lesser-known history of vehicles commonly referred to as "Bathtubs", which despite their unassuming appearance, shaped the generations of German soldiers serving in motorized reconnaissance formations, who after 1939 found themselves at the forefront of armoured formations spreading terror throughout Poland, Low Countries and France.

代理商:大苹果 LEROS AND THE AEGEAN: SEPTEMBER–NOVEMBER 1943
by ANTHONY ROGERS

英文概要: In autumn 1943, the Dodecanese in the eastern Aegean was the setting for a series of German air-sea landings, something not normally associated with the Wehrmacht. Under heavy fire, landing craft ferried to shore German infantry and, more than two years after sustaining frightful losses in Crete, Fallschirmjäger were deployed in their intended role, parachuting on to the islands of Kos, Astipalaea and Leros.

Both sides relied on aircraft and naval units, as well as conventional and unconventional ground forces. German paratroopers were drawn from the Luftwaffe and the special operations Division ‘Brandenburg’, which also fielded coastal raiders and assault troops. The Allies had on call 234 Infantry Brigade together with supporting units; a battalion of The Parachute Regiment, and Raiding Forces, which included the Long Range Desert Group, Special Boat Squadron, Commandos and Ieros Lohos (Greek Sacred Squadron).

Two months of conflict would culminate in a five-day battle for possession of Leros, which ended with the surrender of the British-led garrison on 16 November 1943. The island of Samos was taken without a struggle a few days later.

Unlike Operation Market Garden and the disaster of Arnhem one year later, the Aegean was first and foremost a British venture. As such, it may be considered the last irredeemable British defeat. For the Germans, the Aegean was a welcome reversal of recent setbacks and a final, but ultimately pointless, decisive victory: With the exception of Kastellorizo, key islands would remain under German occupation until May 1945.
