The remarkable story of what happened to the girls in Renoir’s famous painting, Pink and Blue

Renoir’s 1881 portrait of Alice and Elisabeth Cahen d’Anvers provides a glimpse into the grandeur of late 19th-century Paris – a life of luxury seemingly stretches out in front of the beautifully attired children, and their elder sister Irene, who was also the subject of a Renoir portrait. The family were generous benefactors, donating their property to the French nation, but despite family tragedy during the First World War

The worst was still to come when the Nazis invaded and Elisabeth would die in Auschwitz, betrayed by her chauffeur. From the dazzling riches of the Belle Epoque to the horrors of the Holocaust, this is a brilliant and compelling read. The downfall of a Jewish banking dynasty is a tale of innocence and beauty turned to treachery and ugliness.

The Furious Method from the knock-out Sunday Times bestselling author Tyson Fury. Fury went from weighing twenty-eight stone and fighting a deep depression to an amazing return to heavyweight champion of the world. Here, he opens up about his incredible journey back to a healthier body and mind.

Frank, accessible and inspiring, The Furious Method is a feel-good and motivating tonic, full of advice for readers on how we can all improve our physical and mental health, and create a champion mind-set. He discusses resilience and how to use his key tricks of creating short-term goals and using positive thinking. Whatever your starting point or past set-backs, Tyson will show you how you can make your own comeback and start living your life to the fullest - fighting fit, mentally restored, and stronger than ever.

Tyson Fury is the undefeated lineal heavyweight champion of the world. He is undefeated in 28 professional fights, winning 27 with 19 knockouts, and drawing once. His most famous victory came in 2015, when he stunned long-time champion Wladimir Klitschko to win the WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight titles. He was forced to vacate the belts because of issues with drugs, alcohol and mental health, and did not fight again for more than two years. Most thought he was done with boxing forever, until an amazing comeback fight with Deontay Wilder in December 2018. It was an instant classic, ending in a split decision tie.

Outside of the ring, Tyson Fury is a mental health ambassador. He donated his million dollar purse from the Deontay Wilder fight to the homeless. Fury’s last book, Behind the Mask, was the winner of the 2020 Sports Book of the Year. It sold in eight territories, including Germany (Heyne), France (Marabout), Poland (SQN), Estonia (AS Tanapaev), Russia (AST), Bulgaria (Ciela Norma), Ukraine (Fors Ukraine), and Hungary (Konyvmolykepzo).

Why weren’t we taught this at school? introduces Needs Understanding, a fresh approach for finding creative solutions and building relationships at home and at work. It’s based on one simple idea: we’re all on a quest to meet our underlying human needs – such as belonging, knowing we matter, and fun.

Whether you are trying to make a tricky decision, communicate more effectively, parent the way you want to, or make a difference in the world, Needs Understanding can help.

• Understand the ‘fingerprint needs’ that drive your behaviour;

• Discover 10 ways you listen that alienate other people, and what to do instead;

• Stop blaming yourself and others, and fix what’s going on underneath

• Find creative solutions to difficult problems by ‘walking around the mountain’

• Empower yourself to change the world.

Alice Sheldon is the creator of Needs Understanding and shares it globally with individuals and organizations.

Alice Sheldon is the creator of Needs Understanding, a fresh and exciting approach for finding practical solutions to problems, and building relationships that work. Alice graduated from Oxford University with an MA in Psychology and Neurophysiology. She’s always had a strong interest in how we can contribute to the creation of a more inclusive world. This has taken her on a career path that includes being a secondary school teacher, a barrister, and leading the Bar’s national pro bono charity, Advocate. During this time Alice came across two life-changing pieces of understanding. The first was psychotherapy, which inspired a deep learning journey. The second was Nonviolent Communication (NVC), which led to her becoming a Certified Trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication. Subsequently, she developed a model of partnership parenting, and for a decade worked with hundreds of fellow parents to create thriving relationships with their children. This became the springboard for her creation of Needs Understanding, which brings a partnership approach into all spheres of life. The COVID-19 pandemic crisis has changed the way we live and communicate. The phases of lockdown brought about by the pandemic fundamentally changed the way we work, lead our everyday lives, and how we communicate, resulting in Internet platforms becoming more important than ever before. Communicating COVID-19 explores the impact of these changes on society and the way we communicate, and the effect this has had on the spread of misinformation.

Critical communication and Internet scholar Christian Fuchs analyses the changes of everyday communication in the COVID-19 crisis and how misinformation has spread online throughout the pandemic. He explores the foundations and rapid spread of conspiracy theories and anti-vaccination discourse on the Internet, paying particular attention to the vast amount of COVID-19 conspiracy theories about Bill Gates. He also interrogates Internet users’ reactions to these COVID-19 conspiracy theories as well as how Donald Trump communicated about COVID-19 on Twitter during the final year of his Presidency.

Communicating COVID-19 is an essential work for anyone seeking to understand the role of digital technologies, changes in communication and the Internet, and the spread of conspiracy theories in the context of COVID-19.

ENERGY SECURITY IN TIMES OF ECONOMIC TRANSITION: LESSONS FROM CHINA
by YAO LIX IA

As China has shifted from a planned to a market-oriented economy, it has adjusted its energy policies accordingly. As a result, the Chinese energy industry has now gone through more than seventy years of transformation. Yet to date no single work has sought to assess the key factors driving these changes and their effects on China’s energy security, even though such questions have implications for assessments of the world’s energy security. Energy Security in Times of Economic Transition addresses this gap. Juxtaposing a domestic perspective with a wider, pan-energy-industry view, Yao Lixia explores trends in the evolution of China’s energy policy since its inception in 1949 and discusses the relations between policy changes and macroeconomic reforms. Then, by employing a new, ground-breaking quantitative framework for evaluating energy security, Yao crucially shows that macroeconomic reform did not improve China’s energy security over the first three decades of the reform period but in fact restricted China from developing more effective energy policies. This insight ultimately suggests lines of inquiry that can be extended to research in other countries, especially those in the midst of economic transition. For its detailed history of China’s energy policy and its novel, widely applicable methodology for evaluating energy security, this book is a must-read for researchers and postgraduate students in economics, security studies, political economy, and international political economy.

The history of modern Socially Responsible Investment began with the Apartheid crisis in South Africa in the 1970s. When asked if divestment played a role in ending South African Apartheid, Nelson Mandela answered "undoubtedly". But what about SRI in the 21st century, does it make a difference for society? The first part of this book explores the innovative approach of socially responsible investors in building engagement approaches, mobilizing networks, developing new products, and proposing alternative models showing the potential to create change. The second part interrogates the limits of SRI in making a difference. It questions the potential of SRI to create change but also proposes ways to increase societal impacts of SRI. The last section of the volume addresses the boarder issues of values and governance and shows how they are central in the SRI discussion. The book takes a critical but constructive stance on SRI with the objective of contributing to the capacity and ability of SRI to make a difference. Little research has been undertaken on the societal impacts of SRI. With this book we contribute to this debate, pushing the boundaries of SRI even further.

Today Sophie Spikey has a very big problem. She has lost her shoes, again! There is no way she is asking her mum for help, though. I can fix it all by myself, she thought.

Sophie did not have an easy start in life and now she cannot trust grown-ups to help her. Luckily, her new mum is good at guessing when Sophie needs a helping hand.

Written by a mum who understands, and her daughter (who did not like asking for help), this is a story for children functioning at age 3-10.
