THE MOTORCYCLIST
Book ID/图书代码: 12760015B77351
English Summary/英文概要: Carl Black is an intellectual and artist, a traveller, a reader and an unapologetic womanizer. A motorcyclist. He burns for the bohemian life, but is trapped in a railway porter’s prosaic—at times humiliating—existence. Taking place over one dramatic year in Halifax, Nova Scotia, The Motorcyclist vividly recounts Carl’s travels and romantic exploits as he tours the backroads of the east coast and the bedrooms of a series of beautiful women. Inspired by the life of George Elliott Clarke’s father, the novel tells the story of a black working-class man caught between the expectations of his times and gleaming possibilities of the open road.
In vibrant, energetic, sensual prose, George Elliott Clarke brilliantly illuminates the life of a young black man striving for pleasure, success and, most of all, respect.

“Carl Black is an intellectual and artist, a traveler and an unapologetic womanizer. A motorcyclist. He burns for the bohemian life, but is trapped in a railway worker’s prosaic—at times humiliating—existence. Taking place over one dramatic year in and around Halifax, Nova Scotia, The Motorcyclist vividly recounts Carl’s travels and romantic exploits as he tours the backroads of the east coast and courts a bevy of beautiful women. Inspired by the 1959 diary of the author’s father, the novel is a portrait of a black working-class man caught between the expectations of his times and the gleaming possibilities of the open road. In vibrant, energetic, sensual prose, George Elliott Clarke brilliantly illuminates the life of a young black man striving for pleasure, success and, most of all, respect.”
George Elliott Clarke introduces us to a black experience different to anything that comes out of Africa or the USA. At the same time, he speaks to all of us who have ever been curious about what our parents’ lives were like before we existed. And to all of us who enjoy rambunctious language.
• The novel has just had a two-page feature starred review in our trade rag, QUILL AND QUIRE (attached). It is all so amazing that it is hard to choose a pull-quote, but we can start with “dazzling” in the headline, and move on to the last paragraph:
“This ribald, raw, road-movie of a novel is an object lesson in how to combine the political with the personal; if the title wasn’t already taken, Clarke could easily have called the novel Dreams of My Father.”
• The author has been all over the news in Canada because he has just been named national poet laureate. Article about that in our national paper also attached. Judging from it, he may make poetry sexy again.
• The novel will be published in Canada in February.
“The prose flows like music and will have you dreaming about the romance of the road and the heat between a man and a woman.”-- Canadian Living magazine
“The Motorcyclist, with its dense, rich layers of social commentary, historical allusions, and compulsive wordplay, transcends family history…. George Elliott Clarke is an extraordinary wordsmith, and so it is no surprise that his prose is often glorious.”
