    A BRIEF HISTORY

BIG APPLE AGENCY, INC. is celebrating its 28th anniversary in 2015.  It was founded in 1987 by Ms. Lily Chen and Dr. Luc Kwanten and was known as Big Apple LTC Consulting. When the late Tom Mori acquired a minority share in the agency in December 1989, the company changed its name to BIG APPLE TUTTLE-MORI AGENCY, INC. and started representing foreign proprietors around the world in the Chinese language markets in both Mainland China (Simplified Chinese) and Taiwan (Traditional Chinese).  In 2012, with the expansion into the Southeast Asian territories including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, the company name was officially changed to Big Apple Agency, Inc.

When the agency was founded in 1987, there was no copyright law in either China or Taiwan protecting authors’ translation rights. In November 1992, China and Taiwan enacted copyright legislation that protected the rights of foreign authors against unauthorized reproduction and unauthorized translation of their works. Subsequently China became a member of the Berne Convention and other international agreements on copyright and intellectual property protection. In spite of the five-year long handicap, the agency was able to enter into proper translation agreements in China as well as in Taiwan.

Initially the agency operated out of Taipei with frequent trips to the major publishing centers in China. In 1989, the Mainland China office was opened initially in Beijing, followed by the opening of an office in Shanghai. In 1999, the Shanghai office became the agency’s principal office with Beijing and Taipei as branch offices.

BIG APPLE AGENCY, INC. handles translation rights into Mainland China – Simplified Chinese character rights – and into Taiwan and Hong Kong S.A.R. – Traditional (complex) Chinese character rights, i.e. that for each title handled by the agency there is the possibility of two contracts. Readers of Traditional Chinese have difficulties reading simplified Chinese and vice-versa. The agency also handles translation rights into Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

In addition to handling foreign authors in the above territories, the agency has signed up a stable of young Chinese authors for representation abroad since 2005. A list of these authors is available upon request.

The agency maintains representative offices in London and New York. Although Tom Mori passed away prematurely, the link established with the Tuttle-Mori Agency in Tokyo remains in existence.
