The range of topics covered is impressive, from simple diagrams to multivariate methods. I found the two-level approach, ‘The essentials’ and ‘Tell me more’, very useful. ‘The essentials’ are refreshers of what you know but are a bit rusty about and the ‘Tell me more’ sections help you decide whether to use a particular method. Flowchart diagrams showing how the various methods relate to each other are brilliant, really helpful. Examples are good, neither too simplistic nor too elaborate. The writing is very clear and accessible, with a workmanlike ‘you can do this’ sort of vibe. There is an honesty about limitations of techniques, for example why Cronbach would probably advise you not to use the alpha test that bears his name. At less than twenty quid this is an absolute bargain!

John Buglear is Head of the Division of Management at Nottingham Business School. He teaches quantitative methods and basic accounting on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. He has lectured in statistics, operational research and research methods on postgraduate international programmes: Azerbaijan (in collaboration with BP Exploration); the Czech Republic (in collaboration with PricewaterhouseCoopers) and Uzbekistan.
