ALL STRANGERS ARE KIN: TRAVELS IN THE ARABIC LANGUAGE
Zora O’Neill’s ALL STRANGERS ARE KIN uses her twenty years of experiences with the Arabic language - starting with her studies at Princeton (in a pre-9/11 era when learning Arabic was an uncommon pursuit) and extending through her travels in the Middle East and North Africa, including a trip planned over the span of writing this book -- to paint a much broader, multifaceted portrait of a very misunderstood and culturally fertile region of the world. Now more than ever, the Middle East is in our headlines – from ongoing stories of US military incursions to the uncertain triumphs of the Arab Spring - yet few people understand much about the area. Through the lens of studying its rich and thorny language, Zora is able to shine a personal, illuminating and often humorous light on the diverse cultural and social landscape of the various Arabic-speaking countries.
(LNL)
