Butler Lies
In 2010 Cornell University professors Jeff Hancock and Jeremy Birnholtz identified a new type of lie, ushered into being by the electronic age: lies told when we simply don’t want to continue a text or email conversation with someone any longer.
Lies like:
My battery’s low
Better go, I’m going into a tunnel
There’s someone at the door
Your email/text only just arrived – how weird
They dubbed these untruths “Butler lies” – as a nod to days gone by when a butler would be instructed by his master to enter a room after 5 minutes to bring an unwanted conversation to an end by saying that dinner is served, or that there’s a body in the library. Quite why the professors of Cornell University were researching lies in text messages and not say, curing cancer, or trying to get off with their students at a 90s disco, is unknown, but their research revealed that 10 per cent of all text messages contain lies, and one fifth of those are “butler lies”. At least, that’s what they texted their boss
If you’re a lover of spot-on observational comedy, or have ever told a lie, Would I Lie To You? Presents the Most Popular Lies of All Time is the book you’ve been waiting for.
Chinese Summary/
手机电池电量低了;
我就要进入隧道了,先不说了;
有人敲门了;
(DC)

About the Author/作者介绍: From the much-loved BBC TV show comes a hilarious collection of the most common lies we are all guilty of telling.
The cheque’s in the post. I’m still at the office. That looks great on you. Lies make the world go round. And in this book the Would I Lie To You? team celebrates the fine art of the everyday fib.
Like the deliriously funny contributions of Rob Brydon, Lee Mack and David Mitchell in the hugely successful panel game, here is a delightful collection of 100 fibs that all of us can recognise. Lies like: I didn’t even notice she was pretty; I’m working from home tomorrow; and wow, your tattoo looks really... interesting. Written in the same warm, witty and inspired tone that’s made the TV show such a hit, the book uncovers the little deceptions that strike a chord with all of us. There are the lies we tell others, the lies people tell us and the lies we tell ourselves. Each entry in the book is laughout- loud funny, and filled with more than a little bit of painful truth.
If you’re a fan of the show, a lover of spot-on observational comedy, or have ever told a porky, Would I Lie To You? Presents the 100 Most Popular Lies of All Time is the book you’ve been waiting for.
