THE HISTORY OF MODERN FRANCE: FROM REVOLUTION TO PRESENT DAY
Book ID/图书代码: 12290015B80003
English Summary/英文概要: With the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815, the next two centuries for France would be tumultuous. Bestselling historian and political commentator Jonathan Fenby provides an expert and riveting journey through this period as he recounts and analyses the extraordinary sequence of events of this period from the end of the First Revolution through two others, a return of Empire, three catastrophic wars with Germany, periods of stability and hope interspersed with years of uncertainty and high tensions. As her cross-Channel neighbour Great Britain would equally suffer, France was to undergo the wrenching loss of colonies in the post-Second World War as the new modern world we know today took shape. Her attempts to become the leader of the European union is a constant struggle, as was her lack of support for America in the two Gulf Wars of the past twenty years. Alongside this came huge social changes and cultural landmarks but also fundamental questioning of what this nation, which considers itself exceptional, really stood - and stands - for. That saga and those questions permeate the France of today, now with an implacable enemy to face in the form of Islamic extremism which so bloodily announced itself this year in Paris. Fenby will detail every event, every struggle and every outcome across this expanse of 200 years. It will prove to be the definitive guide to understanding France.

Awards/获奖情况:’As the title suggests, this is a book with the ambition to be not just another history of modern France, but the history. In many respects, it succeeds. Jonathan Fenby positively gallops through a comprehensive account of France from 1789 until now. He has not selected only the juicy bits - the Revolution, Napoleon, the First World War, De Gaulle, 1968. He fills in what happens in between so that events are joined up and the narrative complete’ --Independent
’A well-told narrative… [Fenby] is at his best when he teases out the tensions between the republican unifying ideal and the enduring divisions that periodically emerge to challenge the French nation’ The Economist
’Fenby writes with the authority of experience, and his book is affectionate, admiring and exasperated… There is much to enjoy in Fenby’s fluently written history and much to learn from it too.’ Allan Massie, Literary Review
’Fenby uses his long experience as a foreign correspondent to paint a picture of dodgy politicians presiding over the decline of a once-proud nation in which there are now more psychiatrists than priests, where 43 per cent of the population claims to know nothing about wine, 80 per cent of croissants are made in factories, and most snails and frogs’ legs are imported.’ --The Spectator
’A highly readable narrative... Fenby utilises telling details and intriguing incidents in this survey, suggesting that France’s pride in its history is now challenged by deep economic and social problems, such as the development of Islamic extremism’Catholic Herald
