THE WITCH’S MARKET

Book ID/图书代码: 14780015B80252

English Summary/英文概要: From the author of Secret of a Thousand Beauties and Peach Blossom Pavilion comes a beautifully written novel of self-discovery and intrigue.

Chinese-American assistant professor Eileen Chen specializes in folk religion at her San Francisco college. Though her grandmother made her living as a shamaness, Eileen publicly dismisses witchcraft as mere superstition. Yet privately, the subject intrigues her.

When a research project takes her to the Canary Islands—long rumored to be home to real witches—Eileen is struck by the lush beauty of Tenerife and its blend of Spanish and Moroccan culture. A stranger invites her to a local market where women sell amulets, charms, and love spells. Gradually Eileen immerses herself in her exotic surroundings, finding romance with a handsome young furniture maker. But as she learns more about the lives of these self-proclaimed witches, Eileen must choose how much trust to place in this new and seductive world, where love, greed, and vengeance can be as powerful, or as destructive, as any magic.

(LYR)

PRAISE FOR THE NOVELS OF MINGMEI YIP

“Inspiring, courageous story...Yip’s prose is simple yet descriptive, immersing the reader in the sights, sounds and smells of rural and urban China.” —Booklist on Secret of a Thousand Beauties

“A unique and enthralling style…flawless.”–Baltimore Books Examiner on The Nine Fold Heaven

“Surprising and often funny….Part epic, part coming-of-age story, part modern fairy tale.”--Publishers Weekly on Song of the Silk Road

“Yip’s lush, evocative novel is as much about romantic sensibilities as it is in the romantic arc. Eileen Chen is a scholar of folk religion who has been fascinated an nervous about the metaphysical world since she was a child in Hong Kong, exposed to her grandmother’s enigmatic work as a shaman. When profession pressure to publish coincides with her 33rd birthday and an odd event that touches on the supernatural, Ellen, guided by a strange but intense dream, takes a sabbatical to conduct research in the Canary Islands. Thus begins a soul-changing journey that will introduce her to a group of characters completely unlike her urbane social set in San Francisco, and lead her into a world of ancient magic and a haunting mystery that has troubled her new friends for decades. Yip combines legend, mythology and Gothic elements into a magical coming-of-age tale, and her narrative style, which at times seems almost detached, might be distracting if it didn’t fit so well into the dreamlike quality of the story.”

Yip’s previous novels have been published by PT Elexmedia in Indonesia, Avon in the UK, Prozorets in Bulgaria, Sanmin Publishing in China, Trivium in Hungary, Alma Littera in Lithuania, Swiat Ksiazki in Poland, NC Editora in Brazil, Trei in Romania, and AST Publishers in Russia.
