How do you rank the 100 best Beatles’ songs when their music works on so many different levels? Whatever the ordering, fans are bound to wince that certain songs did or didn’t make the list. Personally, I am surprised that household singalongs like "Yellow Submarine", "When I’m Sixty-Four" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" have been excluded, perhaps being considered too lightweight. But that doesn’t explain why "The Fool On The Hill" was overlooked. However, the authors of this book have obviously gone to the trouble, and starting off with "A Day In The Life" in pole position, the list is a convincing one. Each song is garnered with a picture and several sections, including why the song made the top 100. Considering the amount of content now available on the internet, is it still worth owning a book like this? Since the book is packed with much browsable content that includes anecdotes, pictures, quotes and opinions, it justifies the bookshelf space of any Beatles’ fan.

Stephen J. Spignesi is the author of more than 30 books, including The Beatles Book of Lists and She Came in Through the Kitchen Window: Recipes Inspired by The Beatles and Their Music. He is the co-author (with Michael Lewis) of Pilgrim’s landing, a screenplay about John Lennon. He lives in Connecticut and his favorite Beatles song is "Nowhere Man."
