A VERY EXPENSIVE POISON: THE DEFINITIVE STORY OF THE MURDER OF LITVINENKO AND RUSSIA’S WAR WITH THE WEST
Based on the best part of a decade’s reporting, as well as extensive interviews with those closest to events (including the suspected killers), Harding’s gripping book, An Expensive Poison, will be the definitive account of the assassination of Litvinenko. It was a brazen attack, carried out by bungling assassins carried out in central London, deploying a kind of mini-nuclear bomb. In this scarcely believable Jacobean revenge tragedy, Harding follows the radioactive trail of polonium across London, and ultimately back to the order from Russia. This will be both the story of an individual - someone we now only associate with that deathly, pale, bald photograph - and the strange, surreal, violent world of rough Russian justice.
(LYR)
The highest level and deeply engaged in the sell-off of state assets at crazily low prices.
• Harding will argue that “Russia and the West are now effectively locked a new, second and dangerous cold war. The Litvinenko assassination was the beginning of a process which has accelerated dramatically since 2006. The book will include later chapters on the war in Ukraine; the murder of Boris Nemtsov; the death of other Putin critics; and the rise of Kremlin propaganda and disinformation, aimed at Western viewers”. Litvinenko is the prism through which he will tell this compelling story.
• Harding will explore Russia’s willingness to use military force; its revisionist view of Europe’s borders and states; and contempt for international law. The deterioration in Moscow’s relations with the US and the EU has been told before (including by me in Mafia State). “What makes the book new and distinct, I think, is that the political crisis between West and East has got so much worse. Over the last year Russians have come to believe they are now in a state of pre-war with the West. Nobody knows what Putin will do next”.
• Harding has unrivalled access - he has been following this story for years & interviewed wife&son&father, Litvinenko’s friends (Alex Goldfar to Boris Berezovsky) and the killers (he interviewed Lugovoi twice and he has met Kovtun). The book will include “new material on Litvinenko’s career as a British spy; the source of the polonium in Russia; fresh evidence that his murder was authorised by Kremlin.
