SPACESHIPS: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE REAL AND THE IMAGINED

Arthur C. Clarke, the most respected of all science-fiction authors, wrote that even as a schoolboy he drew designs for spaceships—“if my schoolboy exercise books still existed, you’d understand why my nickname was ‘spaceship’ some 60 years ago.” Continuing that the idea of the spaceship has been a “persistent dream” of humankind’s for many centuries, Clarke noted: “We have been lucky enough to have lived in the age when ‘the power has met the dream.’”

This book charts the trajectory of “the dream,” reviewing how humankind’s notions of what a spaceship would look like have developed, from the earliest days through to the first real craft of the Mercury and Apollo programs of the late 1950s and 1960s, up to the present time. The final chapter examines the form that the spaceships of the immediate future are likely to take.

Ideas about spaceships, as Arthur C. Clarke indicated, have been uniquely influenced by artistic imaginings—whether in books, comics, or movies. The science available to the creators of some of these early fictional craft mean that they are laughably implausible in scientific terms to today’s readers, but with others—for example the spaceship Discovery in Stanley Kubrick’s classic 1968 movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey—painstaking efforts were taken to adhere to scientific fact, as known at the time. All of these imaginary spacecraft contributed their part to the “conquest” of space in reality.

Some 75 spacecraft are profiled in the seven chapters of this unique book, covering the gamut from the wildly imaginative ideas of several centuries ago and the scientifically plausible spacecraft of modern science fiction, to the real spacecraft flying today and the incredible designs for the future. Some craft are profiled over one double-page spread; a very select number over more than one spread; and on some spreads, multiple spaceships are discussed on the same ©"Elephant"Book"Company"Limited" 2" spread (particularly when fictional craft are being profiled, as there are often fewer details to be reviewed or shown in photos). Overall, the aim is to include around 75 spaceships—actual craft, influential experimental designs, and fictional concepts—in the book (please see the provisional list attached).

The history of the spaceship is further enhanced by the inclusion of two special features in each chapter; these focus on different aspects of the story, broadening and contextualizing the history. One of the features reviews the ways in which popular culture has both influenced, and responded to, the idea (and, later, the reality) of space travel over the centuries (the influence of Chesley Bonestell’s Collier’s “Space Travel Symposium” articles of the 1950s, the craze for Space Race memorabilia in the 1960s, the influence of particular movies and TV series, and more). The other feature in each chapter profiles key individuals, such as Wernher von Braun, and scientists of earlier days (some of whom were a little eccentric!). This is, truly, a popular history.

(LNL)

Written by award-winning, bestselling author Ron Miller, Spaceships: A Popular History is arguably the first fully illustrated book to chart the history of the spaceship in such an accessible, yet authoritative, way. The book will be of interest to general readers, to lovers of science-fiction books, comics, movies—even to rocket scientists, both actual and aspiring . . .
