So opens Elnathan John’s exceptionally strong first novel, which is much the most interesting and original piece of fiction I have read for some time and I think announces its author as a significant new talent.
A Star Without a Name describes the coming-of-age of Dantala a 13-year-old boy who lives precariously on the streets in Nigeria. Banda is his friend and protector. During general elections, the boys are paid by the ruling party to cause trouble. When their attempt to burn down the opposition’s headquarters ends in disaster, Dantala’s gang is dispersed and he must run for his life. He ends up in another town, where he comes into the orbit of the local mosque, which provides him with food, shelter and, in due course, a ferocious political education. Before long he is faced with a terrible conflict of loyalties.
This novel couldn’t be more timely. As you may know, the elections in Nigeria which were due to have taken place in a few days, on 14 February, have been postponed for six weeks due to the explosion of violence between the army and Boko Haram. But I also think that Elnathan John’s gripping, uncompromising debut is a universal morality tale that transcends time and place and demands to be read as fiction.

The author is 32, a former lawyer and is secular (I mention this only because he has such a strong ability to see the world through the eyes of the devout). Dantala is based upon a real child that he met while he was at University. Elnathan John is a warm and extremely impressive young man, very clued into world affairs, and boasts a 15,000-strong twitter following. He lives in Abuja and, like all thinking people in Nigeria, he is holding his breath.
