THE GUNNER GIRL
Book ID/图书代码: 12691015B81830
English Summary/英文概要: Three women, one shared ambition: to join the ATS and do their bit for King and country. Bea has grown up part of a large, boisterous East End family. But her sweetheart is missing in action, and her mother is controlling her life. She needs to escape. Edie inhabits a world of wealth and privilege, but knows only too well that money can’t buy happiness. She wants to be like Mary Churchill, to make a difference. Joan can’t remember much of her past or her family, and her home has been bombed in the Blitz. Desperate, she needs a refuge. Each one is a Gunner Girl: three very different women, one remarkable wartime friendship of shared hopes, lost loves and terrible danger. Her debut novel The Gunner Girl (winner of the 2014 Exeter Novel Prize) was inspired by her mother-in-law, who saw action as a teenage soldier on the anti-aircraft units in London in WW2. The first few chapters of the novel were also written as a welcome distraction from worrying about her husband, who was away on a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan at the time.

Clare Harvey was born in Devon, and spent part of her childhood living in Mauritius. She studied Law at Leicester University, and has had an itinerant adulthood, working as a freelance journalist and English tutor in Nepal, Germany and Northern Ireland, as well as various parts of England.
Seventeen years as a military wife, as well as a brief stint in the army reserves, have given her a fascination with the largely untold story of women soldiers. Her writing delves into the personal dilemmas of women both on active service, and on the home front, from WW2 through to the recent conflicts in the Middle East.
Clare Harvey is currently working on a novel about women secret operations executive (SOE) agents in wartime France. She has three children and lives in Nottingham.
