JOHN BURNINGHAM’ S CHAMPAGNE
What is it about champagne? What draws us to this fizzing, clean-tasting drink that has become the symbol of luxury and excess, of victory and celebration throughout the world? Why do we seem so willing to pay vastly over the odds to drink it? Nobody really cares about the answers. Champagne has oiled the wheels of business, politics and family for centuries. We drink champagne because it perks us up and reminds us of the good things that punctuate our lives. It softens the resolve of even the toughest Puritans – like George Bernard Shaw claiming he was only a beer teetotaller, not a champagne teetotaller.
So what are we asking you to invest in? John Burningham’s Champagne will be a thing of pure loveliness, as cheering and restorative as a glass of fizz itself. It will be an album, a scrapbook, a potted history and a celebration all rolled into one by the creator of some of our best loved books for children, also a connoisseur of the ’King of Wines’ and how it makes us feel.
John has created a beautiful book of 184 pages, combining his own matchless illustrations with photographs, clippings, menus and ephemera that help us relive a sequence of ’champagne moments’. The cast of characters includes Napoleon, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Noel Coward, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Larry Hagman, John Betjeman, Jay-Z and those amazingly long-lived matriarchs of fizz, Mesdames Clicquot, Pommery and Bollinger.
Opposite you’ll see there’s the chance to pledge for editions with bottles of interesting champagne to drink with it, limited edition prints of John’s work, the chance to share a glass in town with other subscribers and even the chance to take part in a splendid trip to Paris.
Go on, treat yourself and pledge, and help John uncork his next masterpiece....

"It is time to feel the frisson of the chilled bottle in the hand, the thwonking pop of the cork, the soft swish of the pale gold liquid, the snap of the bubbles at the first sip, the sudden promise that all’s right with the world, and if it isn’t, what’s wrong can always be fixed."JOANNA LUMLEY from her Foreword

Born in 1936, John attended ten different schools including A. S. Neill’s Summerhill, in Suffolk, where lessons are not compulsory. As a conscientious objector, he joined the Friends Ambulance Unit for his National Service, after which he worked restoring slums in Glasgow, chopping down trees in England, building schools in Southern Italy and doing demolition work in Israel. He went to the Central School of Art in London in 1956, then created models and puppets for a film company in Israel until his return to England in the autumn of 1960. In that year, his life as an illustrator began. He created posters for London Transport, drew cartoons for magazines and designed Christmas cards until the publication of his first book in 1963.
As well as changing the face of children’s books with his witty, poignant and exquisitely drawn stories: Borka, The Adventures of a Goose With No Feathers, Mr Gumpy’s Outing, Granpa, Courtney and Avocado Baby, to name but a few. John has also produced a series of highly distinctive books for adult readers. After John Burningham’s England (1992) and John Burningham’s France (1998) comes John Burningham’s Champagne, a book that is as original, charming and beautiful as any he’s ever created. And, like its predecessors, it is born of personal experience and infectious enthusiasm.
