COSI FU AUSCHWITZ (THIS WAS AUSCHWITZ)
In 1945, in the aftermath of the Liberation, the Soviet soldiers who now controlled the camp for former prisoners in Katowice, Poland, asked Primo Levi and his fellow prisoners Leonardo De Benedetti to write up a detailed report on the health conditions of the concentration camp. The result was Auschwitz Report: an ex-traordinary account, one of the first accounts ever written of the death camps. The report, published in 1946 in the specialised journal
“Minerva Medica”, is the starting point of every-thing Primo Levi later wrote, as a witness, an analyst, and a writer. In the four decades that followed, Levi never stopped recounting the experience of Auschwitz in writings of various nature, many of which were never published in book form.
From his deposition for the Eichmann trial to his statements in the Bosshammer trial, from the letter to the daughter of a Fascist who was asking about what really happened to various articles that appeared in specialised newspa-pers and magazines, Così fu Auschwitz is a mo-saic of memories of inestimable historical and human value. A collection of eyewitness ac-counts, memories, and reflections that thanks to their consistency, the clarity of their style, and their rigour, give us a Primo Levi who is op-posed to rhetoric, measured, precise, and dry.
The Primo Levi that we have learned to recog-nise as a classic of our literature.
“Once all the people were inside the gas cham-ber, the doors were locked (the doors were air-tight) and a chemical preparation was dropped through the airlocks in the ceiling, in the form of a coarse powder, blue gray in colour, con-tained in tin canisters; these bore a label identi-fying them as Zyklon B.”
