In the land of faeries, brother and sister Pyrgus and Blue are coping with the death of their father, the Purple Emperor, the night faeries’ evil ways–which include stealing the emperor’s body and presenting the realm with a zombie–and their own problems. Pyrgus doesn’t want to become emperor, while Blue has the uncomfortable need to quash her leadership ability in order to fit in with her society. While the royal teens deal with evil Hairstreak and other minions of the Night, they receive aid in the form of inspiration and physical assistance from two humans–Mr. Fogarty, an old man, and Henry, the teens’ peer who also happens to be sweet on Blue, adding a further complication. Gerard Doyle narrates this complex but nicely composed plot in a variety of voices, bringing the faerie world as well as the working class British suburbs earthside to life. Twists and turns are surprising, and the politics of the faerie world are nuanced and cogent and will engage listeners who often don’t realize that fantasy can say a lot about the human condition.
