Åsgårdstrand is a fishing community in the Norwegian fjords which, during the summer months, becomes a beach resort frequented by socialites and bohemians.
The Strawberry Girl is Johanne Lien, whose simple life of gathering berries to sell to tourists and posing barefoot for visiting artist Hans Heyerdahl, is set to change.
Johanne is sent by her ambitious mother to work as a housemaid for the Admiral’s family, in the big house on the other side of the woods. There she is befriended by Tullik Ihlen, the beautiful youngest daughter, who is desperate for sexual and
emotional adventure.
Johanne, who is secretly developing a precocious artistic talent with Munch, is used by Tullik to meet and seduce the infamous artist, whose habits are a public challenge to the respectability of the local community. As Johanne is drawn ever deeper into the raw emotion of Munch’s paintings and his highly charged relationship with the siren-like Tullik, she is forced to pay the price for concealing the secret liaison, and risks losing her childhood sweetheart along the way. The crisis that results when the truth is out will end Johanne’s innocence, undermine Tullik’s sanity and potentially destroy Munch’s work and reputation.
