THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: SIBERIAN EXILE UNDER THE TSARS

THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD is the first sweeping social and cultural history of exile and imprisonment in Siberia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Between the coronation of Nicholas I in 1825 and the abdication of Nicholas II, more than one million Russians were banished to prisons, forts, mines and settlements in the vast territories of Siberia. They hailed from all levels of tsarist society: peasants expelled from their communities, dangerous criminals, duelling aristocrats, writers, student activists, revolutionaries and innocent victims of intrigues and miscarriages of justice, many of whom were accompanied by their families into exile.

Beer skilfully weaves the tales of their crimes and punishments in Siberia to offer up a panorama of Russian society in the final turbulent century of Tsarist rule, but also traces the roots of the October 1917 revolution in the repression of Imperial Russia: many of the Bolsheviks, including Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin, were themselves exiled to Siberia in the 1890s or 1900s. The violent, brutal, and brutalising conditions experienced there make a heartrending story, but also serve to reveal the dark inner workings of the Tsarist state and the incompetence and venality of Imperial bureaucracy, the predecessor to the Gulag.

Chinese Summary/

(LYR)
