LENIN ON THE TRAIN
From the signing of the Armistice at Compiegne at the end of the First World War, to the transportation of Jews to Auschwitz in the Second, railway carriages have played a recurring role in the history of the twentieth century. But perhaps one – relatively uncelebrated – held more significance even than those others: the carriage in which Vladimir Ilyich Lenin travelled from Switzerland in April 1917 through war-torn Germany to the Baltic and passage to Russia.
Retelling the story of those fevered couple of months following the abdication of the Tsar, Catherine Merridale pieces together the personalities and politics of a journey that marks the birth of what came to be the Soviet Union. With its scheming and plotting, its motley crew of characters including Lenin’s fellow passengers (most subsequently murdered by Stalin), diplomats, statesmen, spies and fraudsters, all presided over by the malevolent figure of Lenin himself; LENIN ON THE TRAIN will be a unique account of how the Russian Revolution of October 1917 began.
Chinese Summary/
(LYR)
