THE BONE SPARROW

This is under offer in the UK and in ANZ, and there are now both Italian and Greek pre-empts accepted. A German pre-empt has just been turned down. For readers of Markus Zusak’s ‘The Book Thief’ or John Boyne’s ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’, this is a contemporary glimpse of a refugee boy’s life – one that is played out time and time again in detention centres and camps across the world.
Subhi is a refugee. Born in an Australian permanent detention centre after his mother fled the violence of a distant homeland, life behind the fences is all he has ever known. But as he grows up, his imagination gets bigger too, until he is bursting at the limits of his world. The night sea brings him gifts, the faraway whales sing to him, and the birds tell their stories. The most vivid story of all, however, is the adventure that arrives one night in the form of Jimmie, a scruffy, impatient girl who appears on the other side of the fence, and brings a notebook written by the mother she has lost. Unable to read it, she relies on Subhi to unravel her own family’s love songs and tragedies. Subhi and Jimmie might both find a way to friendship and freedom, as their tales unfold - - but not until each of them has been braver than ever before.
Profoundly moving, THE BONE SPARROW is a funny, heart-breaking and ultimately uplifting hymn to freedom and love. Zana Fraillon is an Australian author who worked as a primary school teacher before having children – she has had picture books and some illustrated middle grade books published in Australia by Egmont Australia and Allen & Unwin. This is her first book in the UK and US, and is currently unedited, at 45,000 words in length.

(LYR)

About the Author/作者介绍: Zana Fraillon was born in Melbourne Australia, but spent her early childhood in San Francisco. Zana has written two picture books for young children, a series for middle readers, and a fictitious book for older readers based on research and recounts of survivors of the Forgotten Generation. She now lives in Melbourne, with her three sons, husband and two dogs. When Zana isn’t reading or writing, she likes to explore the museums and hidden passageways scattered across Melbourne. They provide the same excitement as that moment before opening a new book preparing to step into the unknown where a whole world of possibilities awaits.
