THE MUSEUM OF YOU

As promised, I am so pleased to be able to share the manuscript for THE MUSEUM OF YOU by Carys Bray, the new novel from the Costa shortlisted author of A Song For Issy Bradley.
Let me get the fan-girl gushing out of the way right at the start: I LOVE THIS BOOK. Tender, moving, unexpectedly funny and with a cast of characters so brilliantly observed that I was sad to have to let them go at the end, it managed that trickiest of feats: to be both warm and wonderfully uplifting whilst leaving me in floods of tears all at the same time. I hope you’ll agree that the combination of Carys’ beautiful writing (which has garnered her nominations for the Costa award, the Desmond Elliott award, a win at the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award and a Richard and Judy book club selection) with a wonderful, universal story about a father, a daughter and an absent mother is something very exciting indeed…
Clover Quinn was a surprise. She used to imagine she was the good kind, now she’s not sure. She’d like to ask Dad about it, but growing up in the saddest chapter of someone else’s story is difficult. She tries not to skate on the thin ice of his memories.
Dad rarely mentions her mother, but the second bedroom is still full of her belongings. This summer, while Dad drives the number 300 bus back and forth to Liverpool, Clover will unpack her mother’s things and curate an exhibition – it’s her turn to surprise him.
Alternating between 12 year old Clover who is desperate to uncover the truth about the mother she never knew, and her dad Darren, struggling to keep his daughter close as adulthood threatens to come between them, The Museum of You is an exploration of happiness, love, loss and the universal need to know where we come from.
At the heart of Carys’ enormous talent lies her skill at elevating the stories of ordinary private lives with extraordinary, empathic prose and, crucially, without ever teetering over into sentimentality. The Museum of You will appeal to fans of Anne Tyler and Kate Atkinson and, just like Issy Bradley, is sure to be a prize contender for next year.
Clover Quinn
(LYR)
Awards/获奖情况:‘Carys Bray’s words are filled with the most incredible tenderness and wisdom, and every character is so rich, they each become a story in their own right. The Museum of You is beautiful and clever, and honest. I loved every moment of it.’ Joanna Cannon, author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep
‘Funny, truthful and bold . . . Bray’s fluid, engaging style and humour mask the novel’s complexity . . . rich, compelling characterisation . . . Bray takes on the intrinsic griefs of human existence, and although these are viewed largely through Clover’s eyes, they are never falsified or cut down to size…[Clover] is an utterly convincing child, an optimistic realist…her story and hinterland come to life with exceptional energy.’ Helen Dunmore, Guardian
‘Bray soon reveals herself once again to be a gifted pathologist of the bereaved…Wonderfully honest and moving…communicates with skill the overwhelming power of loss through the mouths of ordinary people in ordinary situations, making her observations all the richer.’ The Times
