KATE CLIFFORD

Book ID/图书代码: 06840015B84718

English Summary/英文概要: York, late winter 1399. Young widow Katherine Clifford provides the worthies of York with private accommodations for assignations with their mistresses. Secrecy is essential, so it is a potential disaster when someone is murdered in the best chamber, a guest she had not approved, invited by her uncle, the powerful William Frost. William swiftly disposes of the body and assures Katherine that no one need know of the man’s death. But it worries her when he refuses to reveal the identity of the corpse, insisting she is safer not knowing. Katherine’s no one’s fool; she knows that someone is going to come searching for the missing man. And when the dead man’s female companion is found dead, floating in the King’s Fishpond, her tongue cut out, Katherine decides it is very much in her interest to learn the nature of the fatal meeting and the identity of the dead man. Her investigation gains urgency when a journeyman stonemason is found hanging in the minster chapter house and William seeds a rumor that the man hanged himself in despair for murdering the drowned woman.

In the midst of this crisis, Katherine’s mother, Eleanor, returns to York.

Eleanor had remarried after the death of Katherine’s father and moved with her husband Ulrich Smit to Strasbourg. Eleanor has brought with her from Strasbourg three Beguines, or poor sisters, intending to found a house of Beguines in York, preferably in the very house on High Petergate which Katherine uses for her private bawdhouse. Katherine and her mother are in a standoff, but the poor sisters convince Eleanor that her daughter’s struggle to find Cecelia Hatten’s murderer is in the spirit of their mission.

Katherine’s investigation leads her into mounting danger as she discovers the extent of both her uncle’s and her mother’s involvement in the building rebellion. But she is determined to clear Cecelia’s and Connor’s names, and to learn the extent of the danger to her and her stepchildren so that she can plan how to protect them all.
