Swapna Haddow has devised an original new character in Dave Pigeon, who’s not the cleverest at working out plans, and the dialogue between Dave and Skipper is very funny. Sheena Dempsey’s illustrations are perfect for bringing the story alive and the layout including lots of use of speech bubbles makes this a really enjoyable read for children just moving into chapter books. Swapna Haddow lives in London with her karate-chopping, swash-buckling son (his words not hers), her thirty-something, age-sensitive husband and Gary the hamster. She spends her time writing, eating cake and making sure her son doesn’t flatten her husband as he attempts to master his human cannonball-trick. Sometimes she does all three at the same time.
Sheena Dempsey is a graduate of the Kingston University MA in Illustration and lives in London. Among others, she has also illustrated books for Walker, Templar, Candlewick, and OUP.
