Dan Smith is the Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and Professor at the University of Manchester’s Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute. Formerly Secretary General of the London-based international peace-building organization International Alert and Director of the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo, he has also held fellowships at the Norwegian Nobel Institute and Hellenic Foundation for Foreign and European Policy and was the Chair of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting. He is also the author of successive editions of The State of the World Atlas and The Atlas of War and Peace. He regularly advises governments and international organisations on policies and structures for peace-building. He was awarded the OBE in 2002, and blogs on international politics at www.dansmithsblog.com.
