SPOILS
Book ID/图书代码: 11701215B85290
English Summary/英文概要: A decorated veteran himself, the author brings scalpel- like authenticity and extraordinary empathy to a familiar battleground with unfamiliar characters. Both the female American soldier Cassanadra Wigheard and the jihadist fighter Abu Al-Hool are deeply complex individuals, and deliver something fresh to a harrowing story. Brian Van Reet inhabits their inner lives and internal conflicts, and the theatre of war with an unflinching eye. Never before has the myriad vicissitudes of warfare and its blurring of the lines between good and bad, soldier and civilian, victor and vanquished been so remarkably drawn through an unforgiving but deeply humanising lens. The same deftness of character description is also evident in the plot. The immediacy and inexorableness of the action combine to produce a breath-taking and cinematic finale.
(LYR)

BLURBS
‘Brian Van Reet’s beautiful, intense, and at times disturbing novel Spoils traces the motivations and desires of combatants on both sides of the Iraq War, showing us what happens when increasing violence and chaos start to warp the choices they’re able to make. PHIL KLAY author of REDEPLOYMENT
‘Moving immediately into the pantheon of first-rate war novels, Spoils reads like a nightmare within a tragedy, a story that is both touchingly classic and brutally modern. This is a definitive record of the war that marked the end of the American Empire. One of the best novels of our time in the Middle East’PHILIPP MEYER author of AMERICAN RUST and THE SON
‘In recent years there have been a number of very good novels by veterans of the Global War on Terror. None is as ambitious, inclusive or powerful as Brian Van Reet’s Spoils; none has this novel’s range or uncanny ability to transport the reader to the battlefield and those rarely explored margins at the battlefield’s ragged edge. Spoils is a fantastic debut’AARON GWYN author of WYNNE’S WAR
