Book ID/图书代码: 11980515B85847
English Summary/英文概要: A powerful historical crime novel inspired by a real unsolved murder.
1946: Templeton and Annie are siblings on the run. On the streets of Sydney, they meet the hard-bitten Dot. As they become embroiled in Dot’s world of petty theft and prostitution, Annie falls into a relationship with the abusive Jack, a two-bit thug, who has just escalated a turf war with an old and formidable enemy.
Meanwhile, 11-year-old friends Frances and Nancy have lost their fathers in World War II, and are witness to the social upheaval as soldiers return home and the community tries to mend its rifts. When Frances stumbles into a bungled drive-by shooting, she unwittingly becomes entangled with Jack and his gang. Then Templeton discovers the body of Frances, who has been raped and murdered, in a local cemetery. Convinced that Jack is responsible, he sets out to prove it, and is drawn into the city’s criminal underbelly.

’A powerful and compelling story, Dark Fires Shall Burn balances survival and salvation against the accommodations and betrayals of a shifting post-war world. With a voice that’s as imperative as it’s alive, Anna Westbrook conjures her 1940s Sydney with a visceral sensuality and a poet’s eye. A seductive tale that will draw you in and on, Dark Fires Shall Burn bristles with necessity and heartbreak.’ - Ashley Hay, author of THE RAILWAYMAN’S WIFE
’Dark, tender and gripping; this book sent my heart racing.’ - Mette Jakobsen, author of THE VANISHING ACT
