In the terrifying atmosphere of late 1970’s Buenos Aires, a young militant couple engaged in the resistance against the military regime adopt a child.Matters had reached a nadir; people were informing on friends and family members, who were then captured by the regime and subjected to horrific torture. Amid this ever-growing oppression, the couple and their baby flee to Brazil, believing it to be a more tranquil country in which to raise a
family and pursue their lives.
In Brazil, the couple add to their brood with a biological son and daughter,and family relations become more complicated. As psychoanalysts, the
parents are familiar with the theories on adopted and biological children,but life is always different from any theoretical discourse. It is up to Sebastion, the sensitive youngest son, to examine the family’s history of violence and exile, and, more importantly, to rewrite the family’s narrative.The result, written in a prose that is both lyrical and essayistic, is a powerful account where Sebastián’s intimate past and the history of a country overlap in an ingenious manner reminiscent of recent Argentinean fiction such as THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES.

A RESISTêNCIA (RESISTANCE), will be one of two winners of this year’s Anna Seghers Prize!
The award ceremony will take place at the Berlin Academy of Arts on 23rd November 2018. < https://www.buchmarkt.de/buecher/julian-fuks-und-manja-praekels-erhalten-anna-seghers-preis/ > As you may know, the prize is given to authors who, following Anna Seghers’ example, make art that contributes to society becoming a fairer place and goes to one Latin American author and one German author. Previous Latin American winners include Yuri Herrera (last year), Guadalupe Nettel, Joao Ubaldo Ribeiro and our own wonderful Lina Meruane. Julián Fuks was chosen by the translator Klaus Laabs, who has translated Cesar Aira, Reinaldo Arenas, Aime Cesaire and others.
Please find attached a PDF for A RESISTêNCIA (RESISTANCE), which has already been awarded the Jabuti Prize for best novel of the year 2016 and the overall Jabuti Book of the year 2016. (The Jabuti is the most prestigious literary award in Brazil). It also won the highly-regarded Saramago Prize in Portugal in 2017.
We are representing the author in association with his Brazilian publishers, Companhia das Letras, who have kindly provided us with the attached document (entitled “resistance_fuks_digital.pdf), which starts with an English blurb but also includes a short extract translated into English by Zoe Perry. I understand that the author, who was born in Brazil to Argentinian parents, will be translating his book into Spanish himself for Penguin Random House Argentina, who have World Spanish rights, but we will not have that for several months. We should have the full English translation in about eight weeks, but the French edition has now been published by Grasset. Here is the French translation attached, and also a wonderful review from last Friday’s Le Monde des Livres. The Anna Seghers Foundation has confirmed that they will be producing a sample translation, although there is a possibility that we may have sold the German rights by then.

Fuks is the author of several novels and collections of short stories and his work has been shortlisted for several prestigious prizes, includingthe Telecom Award, the Jabuti Award and the São Paulo Prize for Literature.
