CHANCERS: ADDICTION, PRISON, RECOVERY, LOVE: ONE COUPLE’S MEMOIR

CHANCERS traces Graham’s arrest for drug possession in 2010, his stint at Riker’s Island, and the looming threat of deportation, alongside Susan’s initial struggle to distance herself, which is quickly eclipsed by an urgent and irrational (according to those around her) instinct to help him. With the help of hundreds of letters written while Graham was in immigration detention in Pennsylvania, the story of two people drawn together by a powerful magnetic force, despite all the red flags warning them to stay apart.

With millions of people worldwide who need treatment for drug or alcohol abuse, it’s no surprise that stories about addiction hold an enduring fascination for readers and here is a unique joint perspective of what it means to fall into and pull oneself out of addiction, and what that is like for the non-addict to live through.

The authors’ story first reached a huge audience in a New York Magazine interview that was picked up by The Guardian and The Huffington Post (http://nym.ag/R7X4RW). The photos and the interview sparked an outpouring of emotional responses, mostly on social media, with many people commenting on the unique interplay of the two perspectives.

Graham MacIndoe, though living in the States for almost 30 years now, is Scottish and has still close contacts in Scotland and the UK. The Guardian Weekend Magazine published Graham’s self-portraits in May 2014, along with our excerpts from my interview with Graham and an audio slideshow.

"I just wanted to let you know that your story was the third most-read thing on the Guardian on Saturday, beaten only by Everton v Man City and Jeremy Clarkson’s final warning. So far it’s had an amazing 242,000 page views, and half those people went on to listen to the audio slideshow, 110,000. So thank you for coming to us with it."

After that story appeared, Graham met with the international photography curator at the National Galleries of Scotland, which led to a major acquisition of his photos:

"I’m delighted to share the news that the proposal to acquire the 25 prints from Coming Clean was approved at our Collections Meeting. I’m really delighted that this incredible and important body of work will enter into the permanent collection of the National Galleries of Scotland. The overall response to the work was incredibly positive. Now my next task is to find a slot to exhibit them!"

“Written with great dexterity and fairness, both authors narrate from their individualized perspectives, vacillating over the blooming of their passion and the painful heartbreak and incremental deterioration of their romance. . . . Emotionally resonant and evenly structured, their tandem chronicle resists overly romanticizing their bittersweet interactions to focus on the dedication and devotion necessary to make their already-complicated relationship survive the fallout of critical hardships. An emotionally complex and intensely personal binary memoir of addiction and sustainable love.”—Kirkus
