THE TRANSITION

The Transition was founded to tap into a vast, overlooked resource: a generation arrested in permanent adolescence, trapped in overpriced bedsits, bad debt, internships and arts admin. The average age for leaving the parental home is now 37. We believe the future leaders of business, community and politics are currently languishing in their childhood bedrooms. They trade commodities with alien races in MMORPGs when they could be working for the World Financial Center; they passively consume until they forget they even have the ability to create; they drink themselves into early-onset sclerosis of the liver when they could be opening their own upmarket bars. Do they lack character? Do they lack motivation? Do they lack grit? Or is it that we’ve placed the first rung of the ladder a little out of their reach and the right advice, and a little capital, might catapult them into the lives we all aspire to? If you agree with the latter, The Transition is actively recruiting new Mentors and we’d like to hear from you.

For Karl Temperley his contemporaries don’t so much lack character as a satisfying plot arc. His MA in Metaphysical Poetry has qualified him to write plagiarism-proof essays for dim but wealthy students and eloquent reviews of consumer products. He is 34 and married, but lives predominantly on crisps, listening to the same bands he loved when he was eighteen. When Karl is found guilty of tax evasion he has no choice but to accept a place – for him and his wife Genevieve – on The Transition. As protégés, they will live in the spare bedroom of an older, more successful couple, gradually learning the ropes of responsible, adult citizenship until they “graduate” into a new life. It seems to be a way out of his feckless, meaningless existence, their mentors are surprisingly lovely, and the scheme appears to ask for nothing in return…

(LYR)
