O LUTO DE ELIAS GRO(THE MOURNING OF ELIAS GRO)

When no human power can help you, where do you turn? On a remote island, a man torn apart by the past, a dying priest and a little girl come together in a story of faith and redemption.

Hiding from his demons, the narrator inhabits an abandoned lighthouse, seeking only solitude. But one day he runs over a 10-year old girl on his bicycle - Cecilia, the daughter of Elias Gro, the local priest. Confronted by the priest, he is made to walk Cecilia to school every day to amend for his mishap, and soon Cecilia’s comical, provocative and bluntly honest character will stir up the narrator’s past.

Obsessed with rebuilding a house by the shore that has been swallowed up by the sea, Elias Gro gathers a crew to help him. They rescue an old chest buried in the water that contains the diaries of a writer who once inhabited the sunken house. Cecilia and the narrator spend many days going through these, discovering secrets that Elias Gro had shared, as a young man, with this elusive figure and the old lighthouse keeper, Xavier, hinting at the moment when Elias first surrendered to a power greater than himself.

As the past is exposed, the narrator’s grief takes over. Drunk and careless, he steals a tractor and drives it into a barn, and is asked to leave the lighthouse premises. He finds refuge in nature, in the island itself, a silent but caring witness, and plunges into solitude. By the time he returns, Elias is dying. And it is then, sitting by the priest’s deathbed, that the narrator discovers the truth about Elias’s faith and about himself, in a magical chronicle of life and death, of resistance and surrender, where one can find, through the singular creatures of the island, all the tragicomedy of humankind.

THE MOURNING OF ELIAS GRO is João Tordo’s most intimate and atmospheric novel, plunging into the depths of the human soul, a warm, funny and heartbreaking book.

Chinese Summary/

(LYR)
