Following the parable of the prodigal son, it tells the story of a younger brother who leaves his family in order to free himself, mainly from the archaic figure of his father. The intense, often biblical sounding language evokes a melancholic, austere rural life, marked by deep religious beliefs. When the son returns home, the family believes that the old harmony is restored, only to learn that the youngest son will leave forever, to experience the world, because he can no longer bear “this prison”.

About the Author/作者介绍： Raduan Nassar，1935年出生于巴西圣保罗的Pindorama，父母是黎巴嫩人。他主要在农村小镇长大，后前往圣保罗大学学习法律。作者的生活与农业和写作密不可分。《古代耕作》和《一杯愤怒》是他最重要的两部文学作品。1985年开始致力于农业和畜牧业生产。2011年退休后住在小农场里，并将所有的商业地产都捐献出来用于建造新的大学校园。

Raduan Nassar, the son of Lebanese parents, was born in 1935, in Pindorama, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. He was raised mainly in small rural towns, then went on to study Law at the University of São Paulo. Like his Lebanese immigrant family, the author’s life has been bound in agriculture and writing. Ancient Tillage (1975) and A Cup of Rage (1978), a novella, are his two major literary works. He also worked as a journalist and editor for the newspaper Jornal do Bairro, jointly founded with his brothers. Although an acclaimed literary author, since 1985 Raduan Nassar has led a private existence dedicated to farming and livestock production. He retired to a smaller farm in 2011, having donated his entire commercial property to the agricultural departments of the Federal University of São Carlos for the creation of a new campus.
