NOW YOU’RE TALKING: HUMAN CONVERSATION FROM THE NEANDERTHALS TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE(OLD TITLE: SPEECH ODYSSEY: THE STORY OF VOCAL COMMUNICATION– FROM NEANDERTHALS TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE)
In SPEECH ODYSSEY, Trevor Cox follows the journey of the simple phrase ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ from the mind of the speaker to the mind of the listener, revealing the hidden complexity of what on the surface seems a basic task. Through an illuminating tour of the forefront of speech and hearing research, he provides us with a deeper appreciation of something most of us probably take for granted: the ability to converse. This will give readers insight into the workings of their own bodies – for example, speech requires a precise coordination of over a hundred muscles, with the laryngeal muscles among the fastest in the body. Verbal communication is central to humanity, so this is a tour that takes in a dizzying array of realms including literature, philosophy, evolution, archaeology, psychology, neuroscience, physics, biology, linguistics and music. And it’s a story that must now also include computer science and artificial intelligence.
The invention of the phonograph marked a revolution in our relationship to sound. Before this point, hearing someone speak was an exclusively live experience: the listener had to be in the same place, at the same time, as the sound was being created. The phonograph allowed the voice to become disembodied and forever changed how humans relate to each other. It was suddenly possible to make judgements about someone from the tone of their voice, to feel enchanted or annoyed by an actor, politician or telephone salesman, without ever having met them face to face.
Today we are at the beginning of another revolution, with artificial intelligence poised to fundamentally change our conversations. For humans, speaking and listening are more than functional processes to pass on information. So far, our stilted conversations with technology such as Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana have been only about facts, but as computer scientists work to advance technologies that we can chat to, they edge ever closer to creating software that understands us and appears to come to life. If we develop machines that comprehend and portray emotions, then how will our relationship to these devices change?
