SHOOT LIKE A GIRL: ONE WOMAN’S DRAMATIC FIGHT IN AFGHANISTAN AND ON THE HOME FRONT
Major MJ Hegar’s memoir, SHOOT LIKE A GIRL is about her time as a pilot flying medevac missions in Afghanistan, her dramatic shooting and helicopter downing, and her successful legal battle against the Department of Defense to get women in combat.
Committed to realizing her childhood dream to be the best pilot there is, MJ refuses to let obstacles get in her way. She becomes an aircraft mechanic commander, achieves her wings and is finally sent to Afghanistan as a pilot. There, on a medevac mission to rescue wounded soldiers in enemy terrain, her helicopter sustains Taliban fire: MJ is shot but insists her team complete their job. This begins a thrilling rescue mission, ending with their helicopter downed in enemy terrain.
For her brave actions that day, Major Hegar was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor and the Purple Heart: she is the sixth woman in history to receive the DFC, and only the second to receive it with the Valor Device for flying in combat.
Forced to stop flying due to a crash-related injury, MJ then finds the best non-flying military job for someone with her expertise – but she is not eligible for it because she is female. When she returns home, MJ leads the charge against the DOD in lifting the Combat Exclusion Policy. Hegar v. Panetta is victorious, and full integration is due to occur in 2016.
(LYR)
