MONSIEUR KA (PREVIOUSLY CALLED THE SOUND OF FALLING SNOW)
Book ID/图书代码: 11320016B90276
English Summary/英文概要: Monsieur Ka is a development of – and a response to – Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Its premise is the conceit that Anna was a real woman, and that her son, Sergey, who would have been born in 1864 survived the Revolution of 1917. The story is set in West London in 1947: Sergey is 83 and exiled in Chiswick, the heartland of London’s White Russian community.
Albertine is not happy in London, longing instead for the Parisian boulevards of her youth. She lacks a sense of purpose, floating through the city unanchored, struggling to learn how to love London, and to find ways to go on loving her husband in his frequent absences.
An advert in a newsagents’ window offers a new lease of life and leads Albertine to a job interview in a leafy suburb, and to Adam Carr and his elderly father, Monsieur Ka. So begins a series of afternoons in which Albertine gradually uncovers the Ka –or Karenin – family history; a strange, extravagant Russian past of royalty and power, lurking beneath the gloss of newly assumed middle-class Englishness.
Weaving the filming of Vivien Leigh’s Anna Karenina into the deep and ultimately doomed affair between Adam and Albertine, Monsieur Ka develops Tolstoy’s classic and folds it back into post-war Europe, as the East/West divide reshapes the world.
