THIS IS MEMORIAL DEVICE

Unique and breathless, Memorial Device is an astonishing portrait of the dreams, transgressions, hopes, fears and disillusionments of youth in the 80s post-punk era

A leading literary piece for Faber Fiction in 2017, this is an atmospheric tale about music and people and a time capsule where voices & narrators bump into each other to celebrate a moment in time when anything seemed possible.

There was once a time when to be in a band meant to be on the fringes of society; to be teetering on the very edge of civilisation, and the civilised. The days before Coldplay, Mumford and Sons, Ellie Goulding. The dark days of early Thatcherism, when money, housing and fun were hard to come by. A generation of musicians, artists and avant garde entrepreneurs, brought up on the vitriol and can-do anarchism of punk, seized this moment and with the spirit of the Situationists, turned oppression into opportunity. Bands like Throbbing Gristle, The Pop Group, Gang of Four, Siouxsie and the Banshees were the fearless frontieersmen of that scene. In this wild and utterly intoxicating debut novel, David Keenan presents the story of one of the great, lost postpunk bands, Memoiral Device -- only this time as fiction.

Set in Airdrie, a north Lanarkshire town on the fringes of Glasgow, Memorial Device takes place in the early 80s. In 26 glorious chapters, each told in the individual voices of the key instigators and innovators of the local postpunk scene, David Keenan recreates a world neglected by and lost to history. Here are stories of depraved sexual transgression, cosmic musical misadventure and artistic endeavour on the margins of good taste. Here is a world of such vitality that the boundaries between good and bad taste are re-drawn as irrelevant and arbitrary. And at the centre of it is the story of Memorial Device: a demented group of Scottish artists and musicians on a collision course with a destiny to fail.

This is a novel that trails brightness and urgency, love and sadness, faith and despair, with the fierceness of a cursed meteor. It takes the world documented so satisfyingly in Rip it Up and Start Again and invests it with the playful invention of David Foster Wallace at the top of his game in Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. It is perhaps the funniest, most desperate, and most moving, British novel ever written about a band who may, or may not, have existed.

Chinese Summary/

(XAT)
