THE BILLIONAIRE RAJ: A JOURNEY THROUGH INDIA’S NEW GILDED AGE (ORIGINAL TITLE: INDIA’S GILDED AGE)

This book tells the story of the liberalization of the world’s largest democracy, as it approaches the twenty-fifth anniversary of the moment in 1991 when it was forced to open its insular socialist economy. That economy has since taken off and created vast wealth. But there has also been profound social dislocation. INDIA’S GILDED AGE will describe in vibrant detail these boom years.
The book argues that like America before it, India is mid-way through a battle to define how its society and economy will develop, and the kind of great power it will eventually become. The Asian century is a race between two sharply contrasting experiments in modernization, as its twin giants — China and India — pursue radically different development paths, from different starting points and with fundamentally different political systems.
The central question facing India is this: can its expanding middle class take control of its politics, to create a cleaner, fairer political system and turn the world’s largest democracy into the world’s largest and most important liberal economy as well? Or will the violent forces of corruption and social division deform India’s democracy with cronyism and inequality, turning the country into another version of Russia.
INDIA’S GILDED AGE presents vivid descriptions of the people at the heart of this battle and presents an unforgettable portrait of India’s ‘Bollygarchs’, its new billionaire class. It promises to be for India what Evan Osnos’s Age of Ambition was for China: a guide to a new world.

Chinese Summary/

(LYR)

——Dani Rodrik

“James Crabtree has written a lucid, detailed, and at times epic account of the new India, opening our eyes to the economic and social transformation that has quietly occurred there in recent years, behind the facade of the headlines. A must read for all those interested in the political and economic destiny of the subcontinent.” —Robert D. Kaplan, author of The Return of Marco Polo’s World

“James Crabtree, once a hugely-admired star foreign correspondent, has transformed himself into a brilliant writer and analyst of the Indian super rich. “A fascinating look into the world of the Indian business elite—the ‘Bollygarchs’—and their political entanglements. James Crabtree deftly explores the changing balance between big money and democratic accountability, shedding considerable light on whether the country will sustain the miracle that is the Indian democracy or go the way of populism and authoritarianism, as so many others have.” —Dani Rodrik, author of Straight Talk on Trade
