English Summary/英文概要： LIFE RUINS is set on the bleak East Yorkshire coast in winter. Kay McKinnon, 68, has never felt the cold loneliness of the empty landscape and vast skies until her husband dies, leaving her on her own in their isolated cottage. The nearest thing she sees as family now is her foster daughter Becca Armitage who is 21 and off living her own life.
But it isn’t just the unaccustomed solitude that makes Kay uneasy. She knows that homeless, rootless young people are being shipped into the run-down towns along the coast as councils take advantage of the cheap accommodation available through the winter. Her misgivings are confirmed when the body of an unidentified young girl is washed up on the remote, rock-strewn shore at Ravenscar.
Becca, although helped by Kay’s fostering, is still a vulnerable young woman who is struggling to overcome a past of abuse and of brushes with the law. She now works at a drop-in centre for homeless young people in the old port town of Bridlington where she befriends fragile, 15-year-old Paige. When Paige goes missing Becca is certain something bad has happened to her.
A story breaks in the media about a horrific attack that has left a young girl mutilated beyond identification and close to death. Becca, worried that it’s Paige, puts aside her distrust of authority and goes to the police. In the waiting room, she meets Jared Godwin, 28, who is there to make a statement about the attack which he witnessed and tried to prevent. Jared, addicted to danger, is in the area to explore the neglected tunnels and derelict mines from Yorkshire’s industrial past.
Becca and Jared are drawn to each other, unaware that they have both witnessed things it is not safe to see and know things it is not safe to know. They become targets of malicious attacks that cost Becca her job and come close to killing them both. Kay is the only person who can help them, but Kay’s contacts with Becca have already put her in danger.
Someone plans to get rid of them all before they can tell anyone what they know. The chase takes them across the vast emptiness of the Yorkshire moors and into the dangerous and claustrophobic world of the old alum and jet mines with their underground cisterns and long-abandoned tunnels, where an anonymous graffiti artist leaves images of dead girls with skeletal faces.

Danuta Kot grew up with stories. Her Irish mother and her Polish father kept their own cultures alive with traditional tales they shared with their children. For many years, she worked with young people in Yorkshire who were growing up in the aftermath of sudden industrial decline. She uses this background in her book to explore some of the issues that confront modern, urban society: poverty, alienation and social breakdown, using the contexts of the modern crime novel. She now works as a senior education consultant, work that involves travel to establish education and training in other parts of the world. She is a regular academic speaker at conferences and literary festivals, and has appeared on radio and television. She is married and lives in Yorkshire with her husband who is an artist.
