THE BOOK OF ILLUSIONS: A NOVEL

Book ID/图书代码: 02740005B02063

English Summary/英文概要: Auster’s 10th novel is the story of David Zimmer, a Vermont English professor whose wife and sons are killed in a plane crash. Zimmer turns to alcohol and sleeping pills to numb the pain. Hope eventually presents itself in the form of silent-film star Hector Mann, who dropped out of sight at the height of his career in the 1920s, and whose remarkable movies become the subject of a new book by Zimmer. When the volume is published, Zimmer receives a strange invitation to meet Mann himself—an offer he accepts with some skepticism. His quest brings him into contact with the mysterious Alma Grund, Mann’s biographer, and an unexpected romance soon flickers between the two. Along the way, they learn some important lessons about redemption, love and the slipperiness of the past. A reading group guide is available at

Awards/获奖情况:" A nearly flawless work, and is the best argument among many that Auster will be remembered as one of the great writers of our time." -- "San Francisco Chronicle"

" Mr. Auster’ s elegant, finely calibrated "The Book of Illusions" is a haunting feat of intellectual gamesmanship...Hector is an inspired creation...more immediate than many flesh-and-blood actors." -- "The New York Times"

" One of his finest [novels]: an elegant meditation on the question of whether an artist or his public ’ owns’ the work he creates, and a thickly plotted succession of interlocking mysteries reminiscent of his highly praised New York Trilogy...gripping and immensely satisfying." -- "Publishers Weekly" (starred review)

" An older and wiser Auster has added a new ingredient to the metaphysical play and deft storytelling, a sadness that colors all illusion, that creates a stunningly moving and very real portrait of a man over-marked by death....It is a story of unspeakable grief told with virtuousic brilliance, which Auster finally brings safely to Earth with a very human simplicity." -- "Los Angeles Times"
