About the Author/作者介绍: B T G Tan attended the University of Singapore (Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physics, 1965) and Oxford University (Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Science, 1968). He joined the then University of Singapore (now NUS, the National University of Singapore) in 1968, where he has served as Dean of Science, Head of Physics and Dean of Students. He is currently a Professor of Physics at NUS, where he is also Director of the Centre for Maritime Studies. He is a Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Science, Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK), Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Singapore and Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (UK).

Lim Hock is an Honours graduate of the Physics Department, NUS and received his PhD in meteorology from the University of Reading, England. He served in the Singapore Department of Meteorology before joining the faculty of the Physics Department. He was Founding Director of both the Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing and the Temasek Laboratories at NUS. He is currently the Founding Director of the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute (SNRSI) and Director of Research Governance and Enablement at NUS. He has received the IPS President’s Medal and is a Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Science. He has also received the Public Service Medal and the Public Administration Medal (Silver).

Phua Kok Khoo obtained his PhD in Mathematical Physics from the University of Birmingham in 1970. He was awarded the Institute of Physics Singapore (IPS) President’s Award by the IPS Council in 2006. He is a Fellow at the American Physical Society, the Founding Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Nanyang Technological University, an Adjunct Professor at the National University of Singapore, and Honorary Professor in many universities in China. He is also Chairman of World Scientific Publishing Company. Professor Phua’s research interests are in theoretical high energy physics, science education and science policies, and has published many scientific papers in internationally refereed journals. For nearly 40 years, Professor Phua continues on strengthening scientific research in Asia and promoting physics education, higher education and scholarly exchanges at the international level.
