Perhaps it’s hungry or cold. Or maybe it’s just desperately lonely. And its piercing wail tears down the wall of habit and indifference Massimo has built around his heart. “I’ll just take care of it for a little while, until it can fend for itself”, Massimo says to himself. But as he strives to save her – because the hoglet turns out to be a girl – “Ninna” saves him. She turns his life around through the sheer force of her personality. She is curious, peeking out of her crate whenever she smells novelties afoot. She is playful, and loves to push her water bowl with her nose until she manages to tip it over. She is affectionate, and licks Massimo’s face in a frenzy of happiness whenever he returns after a long absence. But she is also a creature of the wild, and needs to reclaim her freedom. As she regains her strength, the cage that kept her safe becomes a prison. The woods are beckoning… So, after two long years of friendship and life together, Massimo makes the decision to grant her the greatest gift of all. He lets her go…
But Ninna has a gift of her own to bestow. The news of the strange veterinarian who can heal hedgehogs has made the rounds, and new «patients» start to arrive. Like Trilly, the unrepentant Don Juan of the hedgehog kingdom, or Lisa, the frail, or Zoe, «warrior of the woods», who never gives up. All of them as sweet and helpless as Ninna…
So Massimo decides to create a rescue center to provide care for hedgehogs injured by cars or lawnmowers, restore their health and then set them free. And in so doing he finds the meaning his life had so sorely lacked. When people ask him, «Why do you do it? What do you get in return?» Massimo invariably replies, «Happiness». Such is the gift animals have in store for us.
