BURNT ISLAND
Autumn is just beginning when a skeleton is found on St Agnes, the smallest inhabited Scilly Island. At first no one is surprised by the discovery: the Cornish archipelago has long been described as the Isles of the Dead, with the densest concentration of Bronze Age burial chambers in Britain. Local archaeologist Suzanne Carnew finds the remains, near the Giant’s Grave, a massive granite outcrop which dominates the island and was a prehistoric gravesite for millennia. But the island’s small, fiercely independent community is torn apart when a pathologist confirms that the woman’s remains are less than twenty years old. DI Ben Kitto must discover the woman’s identity, but soon Carnew is found drowned in St Warna’s Well, a sacred spring used by the Christian community from the 6th Century onwards.
Back at home on Bryher Ben is facing his own issues. His godmother Maggie Trelawney can’t decide whether to marry her partner Billy, and his friend Zoe is longing for a baby. After a succession of failed relationships she has been considering using a sperm donor, instead of waiting to find a partner. She asks Ben to father her child, as an act of friendship, leaving him with a tough personal decision.
Ben’s investigation into the death on St Agnes reveals that Dr Carnew had many enemies. The island’s inhabitants saw her excavation of sacred sites as an act of desecration. The eccentric, self-appointed mayor, Simon Pelistry has fought a legal battle to stop the dig, claiming that the ancient dead whose bodies surround the Devil’s Punchbowl and the Giant’s Grave should not be disturbed. The archaeologist had been having an affair with Jonathan Dawes, an architect, whose marriage to the manager of the island’s childcare centre breaks down when their relationship is exposed. Carnew’s husband Paul Gough, a novelist, seems maddened his wife’s death and is taken to hospital. Almost every family is affected by her murder. Many disliked Carnew’s arrogant manner, but the investigation struggles to pinpoint who hated the archaeologist enough to commit murder. In the meantime, the skeleton she found lies in the mortuary on St Mary’s. Ben is certain that whoever killed Suzanne Carnew believed she knew something incriminating about the original death. When it emerges that the twenty year old remains belong to Laura Porthmore, a historian, believed drowned, the two women’s lives have many parallels. Both were experts on local folklore, and engaged in secret love affairs. Ben must discover whether someone killed the women for probing too deeply into the island’s ancient secrets, or their own acts of infidelity.
When a series of devastating fires ravage the remote island of St Agnes, DI Kitto must find the arsonist, who must be one of the island’s 80 inhabitants. First the charred body of an astronomer who had been building an observatory on St Agnes is found in a bonfire on Guy Fawkes Night, then the home of a famous sculptor is razed to the ground. Someone is attacking incomers, and using the medium of fire to remove every trace of evidence. When the baby of Kitto’s deputy is kidnapped, the detective must battle with a smart and highly organised killer, before the child’s life is taken.
(WYL)
