How do you approach the impossible to write about your deceased child? The book’s complex form enacts the rupture and process of assembling the pieces. There are short prose sections addressed to Carl and intense lyric passages. There are fragments from the present that merge with flashbacks and journal entries from the past and present. Quotes appear throughout from an array of literary voices, woven together with Naja Marie Aidt’s own voice. This multifarious book defies genre or any singular description.

Naja Marie Aidt, who lives in New York, was born in 1963 in Greenland and made her debut as a writer in 1991 with the poetry collection Så længe jeg er ung (WHILE I’M STILL YOUNG). In 2006 her short story collection BAVIAN (BABOON) was published by Gyldendal, for which she received both the 2007 Danish Critics Prize for Literature and Scandinavia’s most prestigious prize, the 2008 Nordic Council Literature Prize. The English translation by Two Line Press won the 2015 PEN Translation Award. Among the many literary prizes awarded to her during her career she has won the Herman Bangs Mindelegat, the Martin Andersen Nexø Prize, the Beatrice Prize and the Danish Arts Foundations’ lifelong artistic performance grant.

Naja Marie Aidt’s debut novel STENS, SAKS, PAPER (ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS) was published in 2012 and translated into English by Open Letter Books. The novel was followed in 2014 by FRIT FLET, a collaboration of over 600 pages written with Mette Moestrup and Line Knutzon, which examines and interprets gender and feminism in a collage of texts and images. In 2016 she released the poetry collection OMINA, written with Mette Moestrup.
