English Summary/英文概要： A PRAYER FOR TRAVELERS is a daring, emotionally and psychologically intense first
novel by Ruchika Tomar. Two marginalized young women forge an intense bond
against the constricting backdrop of violence and isolation in Nevada’s northern
desert.
Cale is a bookish loner of mysterious mixed race parentage, abandoned by her
mother and raised by her grandfather Lamb in a loving, if overly protective,
household. One pivotal summer her life is upended by the discovery that Lamb has
been hiding his terminal illness from her.
Adrift and feeling excluded from this crucial relationship, Cale forms a bond with
Penny, a Mexican-American classmate, waitress and all-around hustler. Penny
exposes Cale to the complicated world beyond their small town existence and
beyond Cale’s insulated life with Lamb. As their friendships intensifies in concert with
Lamb’s decline, one terrifying act of violence shatters the little safety Penny’s
friendship provides. When Penny vanishes without a trace, Cale, grieving over Lamb,
embarks on a quest to find her friend. The story is told in short interconnecting
chapters, the structure brilliantly risky and necessary.
This is a novel as deep as its story is compelling.

She has received fellowships from The Center for Fiction, The MacDowell Colony and Vermont Studio Center. She is a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.
