THE ADVENTURES OF A GIRL CALLED BICYCLE

One girl, two bicycle wheels, and a four-thousand-mile journey to friendship.

Twelve-year-old Bicycle has lived at the Mostly Silent Monastery for as long as she can remember, surrounded, mostly, by silence. Every time she meets other kids, she’s astonished by how noisy they are—and can’t stop herself from pedaling away from them on her trusty bike, Clunk. Her guardian, Sister Wanda, decides to fix this friendship problem by sending Bicycle to the Friendship Factory camp, where she’s guaranteed to make three friends. But Bicycle decides that if she must make a friend, she’ll do it her own way. Without telling Sister Wanda, she sets off with Clunk on a journey across the United States to attend the Blessing of the Bicycles. There, she will be able to meet her idol, a famous cyclist, who she is sure will become her first and best friend.

Bicycle expects pedaling across the country won’t be much harder than pedaling around the neighborhood—how steep can the Rocky Mountains really be? She has no way of knowing that she’ll end up with a ghost haunting her handlebars and have to contend with a bike-loving horse, bike-hating dogs, bike-crushing pigs, and a bike-stealing bandit. Over the uphills and downhills of her journey, Bicycle discovers that friends are not such a bad thing to have after all, and that a dozen cookies really can solve most problems.

"In this impressive debut, Uss deftly mixes in elements of fantasy, magic, and mystery—a chatty ghost that haunts Clunk’s handlebars, a second bike that can write and launch missiles, a creepy lady in black with "eyes that freeze your heart"—while always remaining true to the reality of Bicycle’s journey. The author, a cross-country bicyclist herself, perfectly captures the rhythms of day-to-day life on the road: the joy, the hardships ("But everything is just so…big. Crazy-hilly and big!"), the growing sense of freedom and accomplishment, the stick-to-itiveness, the great hunger and the delicious food that relieves it, the kind people, and the bonding with one’s bike [...] [A] terrific adventure, which is chock-full of heart and humor." — Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review
